Re: Consistent common names across checklists

Im sure this is known and has been prodded numerous times before, but one of the things we suffer from is the inconsistency of common name reporting from different checklists.

In the same way that Reccomended taxon name is (in theory) reported from whatever taxon checklist the taxon has been recorded, the common name should do the same thing.

Instead of Sciurus vulgaris being 'Red Squirrel' from recorder3 and 'Eurasian Red Squirrel' from MAMMALIA.
Or 'Skylark /Sky Lark'.

Re: Consistent common names across checklists

The information is recorded within the Species Dictionary but it looks as though it isn't being made explicit within Recorder or the NBN Gateway - and our Species Dictionary website at the NHM is just rubbish in this regard.

Certainly Eurasian Red Squirrel is flagged as the Recommended English Name and Red Squirrel as a Synonym. This information will be diplayed in the new version of the Species Dictionary website, which is currently under construction.

Re: Consistent common names across checklists

The following topic contains SQL which will add recommended common name to the Report Wizard. The results will depend on what is in the Preferred List for the taxa, but it does give consistent results. Version 6.16 will incorpotate the attribute as standard.
