Re: Pherbellia grisescens synonymy

Had this report in from Patrick Roper, our county Diptera recorder:

The RECORDER dictionary treats the Sciomyzid flies Pherbellia grisescens and Ditaeniella grisescens as separate species and there are therefore two maps available via the NBN Gateway showing quite different distributions for each.

According to the checklist of the Diptera of the British Isles by Peter Chandler (1998) Pherbellia grisescens was placed in the genus Ditaeniella by Roskosny in 1987 and this was accepted by Vala in 1989.  Unless there has been a further taxonomic change since Chandler (1998) Pherbellia grisescens should, surely, synonymise automatically to Ditaeniella grisescens.  Also the Pherbellia grisescens synonym for Ditaeniella grisescens should be shown in the information panel on the latter species in RECORDER.

From this it looks like Pherbellia grisescens is not linked to Ditaeniella grisescens in the dictionary.

Re: Pherbellia grisescens synonymy

Dear Charles,

Thank you for alerting me to this. One that had slipped through the net.

I have remapped Pherbellia grisescens in the Namerserver, but it may take a little while for this update to percolate through to Recorder users.

Re: Pherbellia grisescens synonymy

How long, generally, do these things take to work their way through to the Gateway?

Re: Pherbellia grisescens synonymy

Hello Charles

I have just been updating the species dictionary on NBN Gateway from the latest version Charles Hussey sent to JNCC on 9th June. This should be available towards the end of this month when the Gateway live servers database are updated.

However Pherbellia grisescens was remapped in the nameserver after June 9th and so the latest update will not include this remapping. The next one should though (Charles should be able say when the next release of the species dictionary is planned). Once I receive a new version of the species dictionary I aim to update it on the NBN gateway as soon as possible, however there will be a slight delay as I need to put aside 2 days to do it and also it needs to be transfered to the live servers which is usually done at the end of each month

Best wishes

Graham
