Re: Taphrina Fungus Query

Can someone possibly clear up a problem for me regarding the fungal Genus Taphrina on Birch (Betula) ??

As I understand it, the fungus Taphrina betulae produces depressions in Birch leaves, the inside of the depressions turning bright yellow with spores - see over at: http://people.zeelandnet.nl/grada/galle … ulae.shtml.

The fungus Taphrina betulina produces Witches Brooms on Birch trees - see over at:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witch%27s_broom.

However, the NBN Webservices returns T.betulae as a synonym for T.betulina - see over at: http://data.nbn.org.uk/nbnexamples/ws-t … esults.jsp.

Is this correct ?? Are both these species actually one and the same ??  OR, as I suspect, should there be a separate entry for Taphrina betulae available in the Dictionary ??

Anyone ?

Cheers

Re: Taphrina Fungus Query

Dear Steve,

You are, as usual, correct. Taphrina betulae (Fuckel) Johanson is shown as a synonym of Taphrina betulina Rostr. in the copy of the BMS checklist that we have in the Species Dictionary, but Index Fungorum shows them as separate species. I have therefore checked the situation with Paul Kirk at CABI and he has confirmed that the BMS list has been corrected and they are now separate species. I have therefore updated the mapping in the name Server to reflect this change.
