Accepted Name: Psychomyia fragilis (Pictet 1834)
Syn: = urbana Hagen 1860

Not sure if this is helpful or not, but according to ITIS, Psychomyia fragilis is a synonym of Metalype fragilis. It says that the valid name is Metalype fragilis (Pictet, 1834) and that Psychomyia fragilis  (Pictet, 1834)  is "invalid - subsequent name/combination"

I don't know if that is 'correct', but at least it means you can record this species in Recorder.

Thanks Charles, I could not find that syn. If this is correct [I will assume so] then perhaps the synonyms need adding to the dictionary to help others.

I believe the name Psychomyia fragilis was reference from a Red Data Book!

Yeah, I agree the synonymy in the dictionary could be improved. I'd love to see the dictionary go online, perhaps with some wiki-like functionality that allows users like you or I to add synonyms and the like when we need to.

I have had a quick look at this and concur with Charles R that the current name appears to be Metalype fragilis (Pictet, 1834) [this according to the Trichoptera World Checklist http://entweb.clemson.edu/, rather than ITIS or FaEu (both of which are known to contain errors - as does the Dictionary :o]

I see that neither name apperas on the UKBAP list.

Just to keep everybody happy, I shall add Psychomyia fragilis  to the Dictionary, as a synonym of Metalype fragilis.

The Dictionary is of course online http://www.nhm.ac.uk/nbn. The website is being completely rebuilt this year, so I shall take onboard your comment about being able to add synonyms yourself - up until then just do so via this forum, or the feeback form on the Species Dictionary website - even with 'instant' submission to the Dictionary, it will still take a while for additions to filter through to Recorder users.
