Re: Disturbing little bug?

I just noticed a rather unnerving bit of behaviour from Recorder 6 which made me glad I was paying attention. Not sure if it's a bug, or something put in by the developers for their own use, but if it's meant to be there it should come wiith a health warning.

I was looking at the Locations page and intending to search for a site with a name beginning with the word Dinton, but I forgot to press the Search button before typing.

After I pressed the D key, the first site with a name beginning with that letter was selected, as you would expect (not, as it happens, the site I was looking for). Then as I pressed the i key, the page went into edit mode. The n key subsequently moved the focus to the first site beginning with n, but the site beginning with D remained in edit mode.

Luckily I noticed the problem and didn't make any edits to the D site, however the potential was there, especially for a less experienced user, to cause damage to the data.

It would appear then that the i key acts as a hotkey to open edit mode (without the additional use of Alt, or Ctrl or anything else). Maybe I've missed this in the documentation, but I very rarely use hotkeys myself, so why would I? It is certainly a non-standard way of implementing a hotkey action and probably unwise.

I wonder how many more of these are lurking in wait for the unwary?

Re: Disturbing little bug?

Underlined characters are access keys (used in combination with e.g. Alt) used to move focus to that widget - using naked key characters (without a key combination) with a list that supports searching is pretty stupid... lucky there isn't one for delete!

On a related note, the Add, Edit and Delete in the Edit menu are lacking accelerators (Ctrl + combinations) which would be a useful addition.

Thanks Rob I think this comes under 'undocumented features' :).

Re: Disturbing little bug?

Thanks for flagging this up Rob - 'i' seems to be hotkey for editing on all four of the windows (locations, observations, names and documents) which doesn;t seem quite right. I'll check what happened in 6.13 and get this on the list to be fixed.

Thanks,
Lynn

Re: Disturbing little bug?

This behaviour also occurred in 6.13.3 (on all four windows) which unfortunately means that it is not an incident and therefore will not be fixed in the upcoming maintenance release. I will log it for fixing in the next bug release.

Best Wishes,
Lynn
