Re: SQL Server stopped working

Hello

Upon opening our (previously working) copy of R6 this morning we were presented with "EOleException Error, SQL Server does not exist or access denied."

Tried restarting SQL Server (as it had stopped) via Services but then given "Windows could not start SQL Server (SQL Express) on Local Computer. For more info review System Event Log."  This didn't help provide me any more info.

Have tried a system restore to yesterday and again to few days before when all working fine but to no effect.

I can't open SQL Server Management Studio Express to look around as it can't connect to the SQLserver, we haven't changed anything on the PC recently or added any new software.

Any ideas would be most gratefully received!

Re: SQL Server stopped working

Could you please give some more information, It would help to know which version of SQL Server you are on. Also is it a standalone of network installation.  Have you tried opening the configuration tools ?.  If so can these see the instance ?

Re: SQL Server stopped working

Hi Mike

We are using SQL Server 2005 (v. 9.00.2047.00) and it is a standalone installation. I tried to open the configuration tools but unfortunately could not access them.

Re: SQL Server stopped working

I can only suggest that you install SQL Server again. Which version I suggest will depend on which operating system/service pack you are on.

Re: SQL Server stopped working

We've just had a similar problem to Simon - our server suddenly shut down the other day (something to do with a new anti-virus programme not being installed properly) and now Recorder doesn't work properly.

When we try to start Recorder we get the following error message: EOleException: [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied

We had this problem in the past when we moved office.  I think that was eventually sorted by fiddling around in the Registry to change the server name & trusted security.  I had a look in the Registry and the server name looks correct (as far as I can tell).  I tried changing trusted security from 1 to 0 as that worked last time, but no luck.

Can anyone suggest anything, as our IT Officer is baffled

Re: SQL Server stopped working

Restarting the server several times seems to have sorted the problem, but if any suggestions for solutions would be fantastic - just in case it happens again!

Re: SQL Server stopped working

The PC that had the problems with R6 went on to have further problems with its system registary files going missing and the PC not working at all so those two issues are quite possibly linked and I shall be replacing the PC completely in the next few days.

Mike helped us to sort the R6 problem (once PC back from the doctor), we uninstalled SQLServer2005 and installed 2008 then linked Recorder to the new installation, straightforward with assured hand of Mike to guide me so thank you very much for assistance Mike.
