Re: Moving R6 to new computer

Hi

I am wanting to move R6 from an old XP computer to a new Win7 64-bit one. To help, I have loaded Virtual PC and XP Compatibility Mode and have managed to load R6 to the version I have on the old computer (v6.14.4.212) and Dictionary J. I looked on the Recorder part of the NBN website but was not able to track down any advice on moving from one computer to another.

However, the disk that I have to hand is called one site number (for which I have the verification key) and the version on the old computer is an older site number (for which I now cannot find the verification key).

I had hoped to be able to copy the main database files from one computer to the other and then open up with the data, observers, locations, etc all in place. How foolish I am, to think such a thing. I copied the database and ldb files to the MSSQL\Data folder and the Access datafiles to the R6|Database folder.

When I tried to start to start R6 I get the message:

An error occurred whilst starting the application.
EOLeException: Cannot open database requested in login 'NBNDaqta'. Login fails.

I'm not sure how to proceed. There are several possibilities:

- As the new location is different from that in the old computer, the new instance of R6 will never open a database set up by another.

- Even if I tried to use the Backup facility on the old, I cannot open the new to try to 'restore' the database.

It seems that my only option is to uninstall R6 and start again, but without the original verification code, I am not sure what to do.

Can anyone suggest a way forward such that I may successfully move from one computer to another?

I seem to be worse than snookered at the moment. Is there a way out?

Thanks, Ian

Re: Moving R6 to new computer

Firstly it doesn't matter which site id you installed the new copy of Recorder under as the site id  is in the database, so once the original database is connected this will be put right.

This transfer should be easy enough to do, but it will be much easier with SQL Server Management Tools installed.

Can you let me know if you have installed these to save me having to explain what to do.

I assume you loaded SQL server from the Cd. can you confrm this please.

If your installation is much the same we might be able to get away with using MsAccess to complete the transfer.

Re: Moving R6 to new computer

Hi Mike

Good to hear from you. I don't seem to have SQL server management tools loaded (it is a stand alone desktop) and I am not sure where I would get these tools.

Looking on the CD I have (dated April 2006) I see there is folder called MSDE then a subfolder called MSM that has a file called TOOLS.MSM. Is that what I should be looking for? There seems to be nothing called SQL Server Management Tools in the CD.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks, Ian

Re: Moving R6 to new computer

Hi Mike

Very many thanks for getting this sorted. The disk arrived this am and installed easily. Should I now upgrade to the latest version and latest dictionary or should I leave this for another day?

Again, I am very grateful for your help. The version you sent v6.15.4b is working in Win 7 64-bit so I am delighted about that.

All the best, Ian:)

Re: Moving R6 to new computer

Hi

The installation I did with Mike's disk seemed to go well but I found that it didn't work when I tried to edit some data. A phone conversation with Mike sorted out that issue. When installing R6 under Win7 64-bit, the 'Application Files' must be saved in a folder that is NOT under Program files. Once this change was made, I was able to edit data. I thank Mike for his patience in helping me to get this sorted.

However, Mike thought there might be an issue with creating backups and unfortunately, he was correct. I wanted to select a backup folder but was unable to do so and the report, below, is the error report. I don't understand any of it. To be able to use R6 fully, I need to be able to choose where to put my backup file and then for the create backup to work. I don't know about the latter as I have not got there yet. Can anyone see what needs doing to allow me to choose a backup location?

Thanks in anticipation, Ian

I have posted a message on the subject of backups in Windows 7 installations at http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?pid=9381#p9381 . Please let us know if that doesn’t resolve your problems.

Re: Moving R6 to new computer

Hi Sally

Many thanks for your post and help on the phone. To get the backup to work I downloaded and installed the file SQLServer2005_SSMSEE_x64.msi.

From Start, Program Files I ran it as Administrator and followed Sally's instructions. When I eventually ran R6 to choose the Backup location I wasn't able to see the folder I wanted, so on Sally's advice I just did the backup and it worked! In order to see the backup file in Windows Explorer I had a permissions message, clicked Continue and was able see the file and then create a zipped version of it.

So, again, I thank both Mike and Sally for their help with this most complicated database!

With best wishes, Ian
