I installed the 32-bit SQL Server 2008 R2 Express on a new laptop recently and then tried a standalone installation of Recorder 6 but it failed with an Invalid class string error (see http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?pid=8641#p8641 ). However, after downloading Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatibility Components (SQLServer2005_BC) from http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/confirmation.aspx?id=16177 and installing SQL-DMO only (the second of 4 options) Recorder 6 installed successfully.
Note that a forum post by John van Breda http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?pid=7112#p7112 says that if the 64 bit version of SQL Server 2008 Express is used it isn’t detected by the Recorder 6 installation.
