Re: Missing Species

I upgraded to version 6.16.2.241 and Dictionary 0000000Y.

That seemed to cure an exception error I had been getting when trying to import some .csv data.

However, now when import (different) data, arvicola terrestris appears to be missing (Mammalia/Rodentia/Muridae/Arvicola is there if browse Natural History Musuem Checklist of Mammalia, but no entry beneath it). Other genus under Muridae have species beneath them.

Can anyone suggest resolution, please ?

Re: Missing Species

Hi John,

Under the Mammalia checklist, water vole is now Arvicola amphibius. This does now appear uner the Genus Arvicola, but until recently it was separate, probably corrected in one of the most recent updates.

Have you rebuild your taxon indices? (Tools > Database Tools > Rebuild Taxon Group/Name/Synonym/Designation Index) The update may have removed it from the old (incorrect) position but the index rebuild is necessary for it to appear in the correct position.

Re: Missing Species

Thanks for your response Gordon.

I have rebuilt those four taxon indices.

Under Dictionaries/Taxon/MAMMALIA Natural History Musuem Checklist of Mammalia, Arvicola amphibius appears above Mammalia. Mammalia/Rodentia/Muridae/Arvicola still has no species under it.

However, the import does now find a match again, Arvicola terrestris, for the At abbreviation in the data.

Arvicola terrestris [Linnaeus, 1758] [Spp] [Arvicola amphibius [Linnaeus, 1758]] - [arter]

Re: Missing Species

Seems odd, as I have the same version and dictionary, but it appears under ...Muridae/Arvicola. The location you have it now is where it was prior to the recent update. Maybe someone else will be able to shed more light.

Re: Missing Species

Could you please double check through Help/About Recorder 6 that you are on Dictionary 'Y'.

Re: Missing Species

European Water Vole, Arvicola amphibious, is in the correct position in the MAMMALIA list, i.e. in Rodentia – Muridae – Arvicola, in my v6.16.2.241 0000000Y system as well. It sounds as though 0000000W.sql didn’t run correctly. What was in your Scripts folder when you ran DictionaryUpgrade.exe? For dictionary upgrades to run correctly, there has to be a Scripts folder in the same folder as DictionaryUpgrade.exe containing the upgrades you want to run, e.g. 0000000U.zip, 0000000V.sql and 0000000W.sql, not Rec6Dict_0000000U,V,W_UnzipMe.zip.

Re: Missing Species

Thanks for your responses.

Help/About Recorder 6 definitely displays Version 6.16.2.241 (of 18 Jan 2011) and Dictionary 0000000Y.

In the same folder as DictionaryUpgrade.exe there is a Scripts sub-folder.

Ignoring .ini and .txt files, it contains (now):
0000000O.zip
0000000P.sql
0000000Q.zip
0000000R.zip
0000000S.zip
0000000T.sql
0000000U.zip
0000000V.sql
0000000W.sql
0000000X.sql
0000000Y.zip

Possibly they weren't installed in the correct discrete batches (although they weren't run out of sequence).

Other than Arvicola terrestris / amphibius inconsistency, Recorder appears to be behaving alright. Hence I have imported a significant number of records since Dictionary 'upgrade'.

Without restoring d.b. (from prior to program and Dictionary upgrade) is there a means of straightening the Dictionary, please ?

Re: Missing Species

This is being investigated  together with another Dictionary upgrade problem and will get back to you as soon as we can.

Re: Missing Species

John

In this instance I suggest that you set the Dictionary Sequence indicator in the SETTING table to 0000000N. You can do this in MSAccess or in SQL Server Management tools. Then run each of the Dictionary upgrades separately.  To do this copy all the upgrade files into a separate folder,  removing them from the scripts folder. Copy them back into the scripts folder a set at a time.  There are one or two files involved in each upgrade (Eg start with 0000000O.zip and  0000000O.ini). Run  Dictionary upgrade with just the one set in the scripts folder at a time. There is no need to rebuild the index files until all the upgrades are complete.

This procedure is recommended only in this instance and should not be used as a general approach to fixing Dictiony problems.

Re: Missing Species

Thanks for your response.

I'm running MS Access 2003. When I open nbndata.mdb, message advises "This database was created in an earlier version of Microsoft Office Access".

Is it quite safe to convert it (Tools/Database Utilities/Convert Database/To Access 2002-2003 File Format) ?

I downloaded MS SQL Server 2008 Management Studio Express, but it wouldn't install ("SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.."). I think that, in order to avoid such problems, it should have been installed at the same time as the first SQL Server 2008 instance.

Re: Missing Species

Hi John
Not sure I can help with the problem installing Management Studio Express, it is obviously a bug that needs to be taken up with Microsoft.
Rather than convert the file (which might break any report or addin dependent on it) I would suggest copying the file first and converting the copy.
Best wishes
