Re: recorder backup

Use Tools – Database Tools – Backup Database in Recorder 6, then locate the backup file, NBNData.bak, and write it to a DVD. In a recent standalone installation on Windows XP it should be in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Backup but it may be in the Temp folder of the user who installed Recorder 6, e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Local Settings\Temp. If this doesn’t work you will need to stop SQL Server then copy the actual database, NBNData_Data.MDF and nbndata_data_log.LDF, to DVD but don’t forget to start SQL Server again before using Recorder 6. In a standalone installation on Windows XP these files should be in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data.

Another option is to use SQL Server Management Studio (Express) to detach the database, then copy the .MDF and .LDF to DVD, then use Management Studio to attach the database again prior to using Recorder 6. To do this on PCs running Vista or Windows 7 you will need to run Management Studio as an administrator.

A user running Vista contacted me yesterday on this subject. He was able to do a backup in Recorder 6 but we couldn’t locate NBNData.bak and we had to install Management Studio Express and resort to using detaching the database etc. Can anyone tell us where NBNData.bak would be stored on a Vista PC?

Re: recorder backup

If recorder won't tell you where the backup is located (from Tools/Database Tools/View or change backup location), then you can find it using Management Studio Express by browsing in the left-hand pane to Server Objects/Backup Devices and checking out the properties of the NBNData_Backup device which includes the file path.

Re: recorder backup

Sorry, I should have remembered that but I was looking for it before we had installed Management Studio. Tools – Database Tools – View or Change Backup Location said it was in C:\Program Data\Recorder 6 but we couldn’t navigate to that location. I was providing telephone support and I couldn’t work out how to do that in Vista remotely.

Re: recorder backup

The answer would seem to be to change the backup location to somewhere which is accessible then.
