Re: Another backup problem

When I look at the 'Tools->Database Tools' menu in Recorder, I don't see an item for backing up the database.

There is a menu item titled 'View or change backup location...', and when I select this I get a message saying "Can't find backup device NBNData_backup".

I wonder if the backup menu item is not visible because Recorder cannot find the backup location. But I'm not given the chance to change the backup location when I've okayed the above message.

I've looked at the database in Management Studio to see if I can set the location of the backup there, but I cannot find where it is set. Can anyone give me any pointers?

No matter - I'm using Server Management Studio to do it instead.

Re: Another backup problem

Some quick thoughts. If you are using your own SQL Server installation, then Recorder will assume you have your own backup plan in place. The built in backup is really only for SQL Express usage. The menu option does indeed disappear because the backup device is not in place, though in theory so should the menu items for changing the backup location. Or at least they should give you the chance to create the backup device.

Re: Another backup problem

Hi Jon - we are using SQL Server express 2008 - but maybe this amounts to the same thing.

Re: Another backup problem

I think the distinction currently is whether Recorder installed the database itself, or you installed it. As far as I can see if you used the installation CD to install the NBNData database then the device should exist, but maybe this is an area for us to check works still with SQL Express 2008.

Re: Another backup problem

Hi John - that makes sense. We upgraded our MSDE DB to SQL Server 2008 Express ourselves and pointed R6 to it, so effectively installing our own DB I guess.
