Re: vitality in layered vegetation records

is there an easy way to incorporate vitality data in vegetation records? For example:
I have a forest vegetation record consisting of 5 vegeation layers: mosses, herbs, low shrubs, high shrubs and trees and I want to record the cover of different species in different layers by means of a recording card. That's no problem using the appropriate measurement units and qualifiers. But how can I distinguish between different vitality classes of a species within the same vegetation layer without having an explosion (number of layers times number of vitality classes) of measurement fields in my recording card, e.g.
Quercus robur - high shrub layer - alive - 25% cover
Quercus robur - high shrub layer - dead - 10% cover

similar cases in heath-records where it is often necessary to distinguish between vital, old, shrubby, .. Caluna

One solution which is possible is to put the data in as one measurement using a code of some sort (eg hs/a/25 for high shrub layer - alive - 25 % cover ) and then split this out into  separate measurements with a Batch Update.   This has been done with complex measurements used for other purposes. Usually this method speeds up the data input, but means that keying mistakes can be made, To cover for this you can put some validation into the Batch Update so that it only splits valid entries. An XML  report on and find any instances where an error has been made so that these can be corrected.
