Re: Upgrade issues - 6.14.5

I've been having a go at this latest upgrade.
Ive not had any real issues with previous upgrades so I was hopeful.

Upgrade stops with message:

Missing Database Upgrade Scripts
"A different upgrade is required to upgrade your version of Recorder. blah blah blah"

I also get the message periodically:
The following file could not be upgraded, either because it is in use or you have insufficient priveleges: RecorderApp.ntv.lng.
please resolve the problem and start again.

My Settings table:
Version (6.14.4.212).
DbSeq - 0000007D
Dict seq - 000000J

So i cant see that there is anything wrong there.

A Network installation and appropriate login provided.
Any thoughts where glitsch might be hidden?

Re: Upgrade issues - 6.14.5

The bleary eyed innocent morning breaks.

Whats this you tell me...?
Recorder crashing?
But why my little poppet?

Enough waffle - one of our users tells me the system is crashing when she tries to access names and addresses.
I check the version in the software and it tells me it is now V6.14.5.218.
But wait, the settings table says its only 6.14.4.212.

A conundrum.

Whatsmore, the way the upgrade behaved last night suggested that no upgrade was made - yet the program tells a different story.

Sigh.
Where to go from here.
I sense my day disintegrating.

Re: Upgrade issues - 6.14.5

Lights up. Scene - Later that day (but still before any caffeine), manky office in back rooms of 'excellent regional Museum with lots of things to do for all the family';

Our 'Names and addresses' crash throws up similar offence as defined in thread:
http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?id=1281

Cant find stored procedure - 'usp_RelationRoleType_Select'.

I check through the four scripts in the upgrade against the database - no signs of any changes in the database tables, therefore upgrade has not taken place.
Nevertheless, the version numbers differ between the program and the Settings table - (I'd always assumed the program got the version from the settings table, fool me!)

SO I try and restore the database with a clean reboot, from last night... No no no.
Message suggests that another user is logged in, or that an Addin is maintaining a connection.
I smell fish.

What to do?
If I run these four scripts seperately, and update the version number in the Settings table - will that be fine?
Or is their black magic hidden in those other files that needs to be executed too, ensuring its beyond my capability?

?

Scene ends: Matt retreats clutching a cafetiere to his chest. Lights down.

Re: Upgrade issues - 6.14.5

Help - About Recorder 6... tells you the version of the software not the version of the database and, in v6.14, the dictionary version from Dict Seq in the Setting table. Version in the Setting table tells you the version of the database. If the version of the software isn’t the same as the version of the database you will often encounter problems. If, for example, you try to run v6.14 with a v6.13 database it won’t work because v6.14 requires the changes made to the database by that upgrade in order to run. This can happen if an upgrade fails to run properly or if you restore a database from a previous version. DB Seq in my v6.14.4.212 system is 0000007I but yours is 0000007D so it sounds as though not all the scripts ran when you upgraded to v6.14.4.212. You should be able re-run the upgrades to bring the two into line provided you have sufficient rights and nothing else is stopping them from running. Posts in http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?id=1281 may help avoid further problems.

Just to confirm - not being able to open the Names & Addresses window is indeed a symptom of running 6.14.5 against an older database version.

Re: Upgrade issues - 6.14.5

It does sound like the problem we had (as described in the thread you provided the link to Matt), we fixed it just by running all the scripts in SQL Server management studio, but this must be done by someone with the necessary permissions.

Re: Upgrade issues - 6.14.5

Thanks folk.

To get up and running, on Friday, I ran the seperate scripts - J,K,L,M.
Monday - Sallys reply troubles me as it suggests I need to go further back, to a previous incarnation, at a time when everything seemed OK.

(teeth grinding chunter)
Ill dig.

Time passes
Have dug.

Looking back at previous upgrade, I note that the  ...0007E script glitsched.
As everything seemeed to be working I didnt unravel at the time - (lessons to be learnt!).
Having now unraveled, and run the scripts ..7E through ..7I, and combined with previous scripts 7J through 7M, I think Im at the right square.

However, because I have run these scripts seperately, the DBseq value wont have changed at all - Can I just edit this to... '0000007M' and be done?

Re: Upgrade issues - 6.14.5

On another point then...

I start with Recorder telling me it is version 6.14.4.212.

I run the 6.14.5 upgrade UNSUCCESSFULLY it turns out (none of the scripts are implemented) yet the software tells me [Help > About Recorder6] that it is now 6.14.5.218.
Isnt this a bit of an error. I infer from this window that it has actually undertaken some of the upgrade when it hasnt.

This was the inferrance I took from the previous upgrade, despite the script ...0007E throwing an error up, the version number suggested that the software had changed to 6.14.4.212.
I took this to be evidence that the upgrade had worked.

SO, Im not sure what the value is of the software version number if not to suggest that the software IS that version.
In other words, shouldnt that version number only be changed when the upgrade has been successful?

Unless I still havent grasped the full story.
