Re: Mapping in a networked environment

Hi all,

Quite simply, how is mapping in Recorder 6 in a networked environment achieved?

If, for example I open a map, the next user to open that map is prompted to reset it. The next time I want to open the same having opened it previously, I get the prompt and so on...

Of the 3 directories I believe are used (Base Maps/Map Files/Objects) - where do they reside, the server or the workstation?

I've tried having, for example, all 3 on each workstation, reflected the local registry accordingly and all workstations still prompt for a reset.

Has anyone managed to get this functionality working?

Re: Mapping in a networked environment

Hi Les,

Half term this week so not as easy to organise myself as normal. I have had this all working in the past, though admittedly I've not tried the latest release as a network mapping install so it is possible there is a regression in it. To use it as it is intended, the Base Map folder should be on the workstation AND on the server, though it is the workstation copy that gets used and should be pointed to by the registry setting Base Map Path. The Map File Path should definitely point to a folder on the workstation. The Object Sheet File Path is the odd one out as it should be on the server, and shared by all users who are using this map. It is also important to ensure that all users access this folder via the same drive letter otherwise the map will think it is a different path and try to reset.

The other thing to bear in mind is that there are 2 types of reset, one is the complete reset, and one is really just a "join" operation when a user starts using a map that already exists.

Sorry if it is a bit vague but working from home I am not running the network version. Let me know if this does not help though and I will set up a dummy network install to check it out.

Best Wishes

http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?pid=2611#p2611 may also help re the Base Maps, Map Files and Object Sheet folders. As that post says, there is a useful write-up of how the mapping works towards the end of the latest version of the Network Installation Guide which is now available at http://www.jncc.gov.uk/page-4595 . Unfortunately it hasn't been updated for v6.14, i.e. that the installation DVDs now have SQL Server Express on them not MSDE, etc.
