Re: Useless species!

Whilst doing an import on one of my machines which can actually import! I had the following error message when trying to match species in the list:

"The taxon selected is from a species list that is inappropriate for data entry purposes. Please choose a taxonomic checklist to select the taxon from."

I was searching for "Liquidamber styraciflua" on the "All preferred lists" - the only entry for L.s. is on "BRC list of additional vascular plant names"

I have seen this before but wasn't annoyed enough to post! What is the point of entries in the species dictionary which cannot be used! ... And how do I enter Liquidamber?

Re: Useless species!

Craig,

When you get that message, its a roundabout way of saying that that checklist should be used for reporting purposes only. It was introduced to to ward people away from entering data using these 'deprecated' or non-preferred lists. You've obviously run into an edge-case there where the species you're looking for only exists on that one list, which is rather strange.

Re: Useless species!

Looks like Sweet Gum, with the synonym Liquidambar styraciflua is on the List of additional names checklist which should be available for data entry.

Re: Useless species!

Just checked my copy of Recorder on Dictionary version 'N' and as you say sweet gum is there - pity that Liquidamber isn't also indexed!

Thanks Gordon, at least I can add the record now

Re: Useless species!

Craig it's my understanding that your version is a mis-spelling, not a true synonym. I could be wrong, but as far as I know the spelling is usally Liquidambar, not Liquidamber.
