We've found a problem when editing records.  When we try and add an extra determiner to a previously entered record, we get an 'unhandled error' message pop up when we press save.  If we try and continue with the application, the unhandled error message repeats.  If we press cancel, the unhandled error disappears, but the new determiner has been repeated several times.  We cannot delete the extra determiners - we get the unhandled error every time.

I think there might have been the same problem occurring occasionally during data entry, when saving records entered via a recording card.  When we press save, we get the unhandled error message, and it looks like the records haven't saved - however, they have saved, sometimes more than once, so we get records repeated.

The error report is below.  What is the best thing to do when an unhandled error message pops up?  Do we Continue, Re-start or Close the application?

Hi Eleanor,

I've just started to get this error, has some very strange repercussions! First time it occurred, I tried entering the determiner again a couple of times, only to get the same error - however, when I exited Recorder and re-started, I found to my dismay that the determination HAD been added so this record had 5 determinations, four of which were identical - when I tried to delete the excess determiners Recorder wouldn't let me giving the same error.

It strikes me there is a problem which you, Rob and I have because all the copies are displaying similar error messages - I'm glad I'm not the only one, but I really could do with it being fixed!!!

I think the problems with the determiners has started relatively recently for us (either that, or people have been swearing at Recorder VERY quietly!)

It might have started after the last upgrade - we are on 6.14.5.218 (Nov 2009).  I am hoping that we can avoid the determiners being repeated if we press Cancel after getting the unhandled error, rather than trying to save it again.  Or we'll just give up on trying to add extra determiners & put all the info in the comments instead.

Agreed, I've only seen this error since the last upgrade - although admittedly this could be a coincidence because we don't often need to add second determiners

I've successfully added new determinations to taxon occurrences on many occasions - until today. I only upgraded to 6.14.5 at the beginning of February and I cannot now add a determination without the exception described above.
The problem appears to be that the previous determination is not being updated to 'non preferred', so you end up with multiple preferred determinations. This can be fixed by editing the data manually, but obviously this in not ideal!

We have only had this problem since the last upgrade as well. As we are going through a major data cleaning exercise at the moment and need to add a lot of redeterminations the timing couldn't be worse. Any idea when we might get a fix for this so we can plan around it?

Yesterday I hit a similar problem when I tried to put in a change of address for a recorder and ended up with two preferred addresses. It doesn't give an error but won't let me deselect or delete the old one and continues to show it on the Individual tab. Trivial compared to the determinations problem, but it used to work.

Re: error message when trying to save record cards- I have had the same problem! I posted details on 17 nov 2009 but no replies. Mike had a look at it, then it seemed to cure itself, but only temporarily and its back, niggling away!

This problem is now seriously affecting the functionality and more importantly the usability of Recorder 6, I urgently need to add some redeterminations, but it just isn't worth the hassle at the moment.

This needs a fix ASAP

Hi All,

We've been contiuning to investigate this issue but as of yet have not been able to track down the cause.  In version 6.14.5 of Recorder, there were no changes made to this area so this issue has become rather puzzling. 

In version 6.14.6 of Recorder (release due imminently) we have changed the error handling so that we will be able to obtain more detailed error messages and track down the root cause.

I am still pulling my hair out waiting for this to be sorted (not much hair left!!!) - any report on when it will be fixed - I'm supposed to be sending our moth recorder's data to the NMRS, but I cannot sort out a long list of redeterminations - this is now VERY urgent for this project.

Given that 6.14.6  was imminent a month ago, and that this is only going to provide better error handling to help diagnose the problem I guess we're some way off being able to re-determine records? This not very satisfactory from a data management point of view, particularly when we have targets to meet.

Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience caused by this matter.
To clarify, there were incidents encountered during the testing of 6.14.6 which prevented its release in March. It was decided to include the resulting amendments in the next version release (6.15) which has now been scheduled for mid June.

At this rate we won't get a fix to this problem until next year, is there anything we can do to speed things up? This is not an intermittent problem, at least not on my system, it occurs every time I try to add a new determination and so is easily reproduced. If the new error handling is in v6.15 and this is now being tested, couldn't the error be traced as part of that testing and a fix included in the new release in June?

We now have a backlog of several hundred redeterminations to do and are unable to progress work on the threatened lichens database that many people are waiting for, as well as other aspects of our lichen database project. The delays are getting to be embarassing.

Please note that a similar problem has appeared when adding a change of address to an individual.

Mary - were the incidents encountered that prevented the previous release related to this problem? Does this mean that 6.15 will fix this bug or will 6.15 merely enable you to find out what is causing the bug? It is not as though this is a minor inconvenience to one or two people - this is a major headache for several of us!

Hi Dave,

I understand that this is a very frustrating issue for a number of you. To my knowledge, there were a number of incidents which arose during testing of 6.14.6 which prevented its release although I am not sure whether editing records was one of them.

The error handling has certainly been changed for 6.15, which will help to identify any issues more clearly.

I can confirm that records can be edited in 6.15, in terms of adding new determinations and recorder addresses.

I have spent some time investigating this and think the problem is that the Import Wizard is not populating the Taxon_DetermInation Comment properly. On a test system which produced this error, the error  could be stopped by adding a comment into Taxon_Determination. This worked if the comment  was aded via Recorder or directly into the table via SQL Server. Hopefully, this will give Dorset a clue to what is happening so that it can be corrected for the next release. As a temporary measure I suggest that Taxon_Determination comment is checked before adding a new determination and if it is blank then  a comment can be added before proceeding.    If  the fault has left the system with mutiple preferred Determinations on some  records then these can be removed automatically by using syetm supplied Batch Update Pref1.

The problem with the Recording card does not seem to be related
