Re: NERC S41 designation for White Admiral

I’ve just asked the report wizard to find records of butterflies with “England NERC S.41” designation and it correctly reported six of our seven resident species. It missed out White Admiral however.

All butterfly records were imported using the Recorder 3.3 checklist so White Admiral was imported as Ladoga camilla (NBNSYS0000078108 I think).

I’m assuming designations should match through the synonym tables to the current scientific name of Limenitis camilla?

Is there a bug somewhere, or have I done something wrong?

This is the first time I’ve tried using the designation reporting. How stable is it?

(I’m using 6.14.5.218 with dictionaries up to N).

In trying to debug this behaviour, which appears consistent with everything I've tried so far, I decided instead to select the attribute Taxon->Statuses->England NERC S.41 for the report so I could see what it is set to for this species. Selecting this attribute however causes the report wizard to crash (independent of which species are chosen for the report, or which other attributes are selected) with the following transcript:

In the following snippet of SQL, there appears to be a quote missing after Yes. That can probably be fixed if you are able to locate the relevant entry in the report wizard tables.

I also wonder if the dot in "England NERC S.41" might be causing a problem? Probably not, but worth checking maybe.

I've just noticed that the NBN Gateway too seems to have problems with White Admiral.

If I type in Ladoga camilla I get 19 datasets listed including Butterfly Conservation's datasets up to 1999 only.

If instead I type in White Admiral or Limenitis camilla I get only 12 datasets listed including Butterfly Conservation's dataset covering 2000-2004 only.

I get different maps for the two cases. The taxonomic information says both are correct names and neither references the other. These are the same species aren't they?

I have implemented basic distribution map web-services for our locally-sourced datasets here http://www.bedscape.org.uk/BNHS/soap/index.htm and find that for Ladoga camilla no common name was returned from the Gateway, but for all other butterflies in the dataset they are, with one exception - Camberwell Beauty which also appears on the Gateway in two guises (and maps) Nymphalis antiopa and Aglais antiopa, only the latter seemingly known as Camberwell Beauty, but most gateway records are for the former?

Am I missing something embarassingly obvious?

Can't help with your synonymy issue Keith, but we had already discussed the error you detected in the reporting tables. It is actually much more general, affecting dozens of statuses, not just the NERC ones.

Hello Keith

The NBN Gateway uses the NHM species dictionary. In this dictionary the preferred name for White Admiral is Limenitis camilla and Camberwell Beauty is Agalis antiopa. Searching on either the common or scientific name should bring up the same map.

However neither Ladago camilla or Nymphalis antiopa are associated with the corresponding preferred name in the NHM species dictionary so searching on these on the Gateway lead to a differing map and no common name.

What is need is for the NHM species dictionary to be updated so that  these 2 synonymous names are linked to their preferred name. I have requested this so that once is has been incorporated it can be updated on the NBN Gateway as the dictionary on the Gateway is updated
