Re: Using a pocket pc for recording and surveying work
I would like to use my pocket pc for species recording.
Is there a simple way to transfer data to and from Recorder 2002/6?

You can use the spreadsheet application in your PocketPC and then use Recorder's import wizard to import the data in. There isn't a version of Recorder specifically for the PocketPC though. If you want specific recording software for a handheld, you might want to take a look at AditTrec.

And also AditSync on the same site.

Hi there,
We've recently purchased some HP iPAQ hw6515 which will run Windows Mobile 2003 SE. On to these we're putting ArcPad 7 to do infield mapping with the inbuilt GPS system.
By talking directly with Paul Griffiths, the technical Director with Adit Limited, we will be going with a Full AditSite to be used at head office to collate the data and export to Recorder. They are currently doing some compatibility testing with R6 regarding this so once we get up & running a wee report shall find its way here!
However the main reason for using this route will also depend on the outcome of this year's pilot project whereby we issued 3 of our seasonal Reserve Wardens with R6 to enter thier observations on using the traditional recording cards & excel sheets. We anticipate that the oppurtunity of giving them the means to GPS their data & then upload will be warmly welcomed.
Cheers now, Rob.
I'd be very interested indeed to follow your progress on this Rob.
A wee update direct from Paul Griffiths. He's done some testing and recently sent me this information:
Quick update on progress:
AditLink
AditLink has been developed as an 'automatic, powerful and easy to use link between various wildlife recording systems and DMAP for Windows'.
It currently supports Recorder 2000, Recorder 2002, Recorder 6, AditSite, Levana (export file) and MapMate (export file) as source databasesMore info at http://www.aditsite.co.uk/html/aditlink.html
AditSync
AditSync Integrates handheld recording on a Pocket PC (using AditTrec) with Recorder 2002 and Recorder 6
More info at http://www.aditsite.co.uk/html/aditsync.html
As we continue our tests, we shall keep this forum updated as well,
Cheers now, Rob.
Hi Rob,
We at HBIC are very keen to trial some remote PDA data entry such as Adit. Do you have an update on your project?
Cheers,
Andy.

Hi - not sure if you will get a response from Rob as I think he has moved on to pastures new.
You are of course welcome to a sales pitch on the virtues of our wonderful software, but you may prefere an independent viewpoint - maybe Rob Davies at West Wales BIC who uses AditForm (rob.davies@wwbic.org.uk) or David Gardner at Kent Butterflies & Moths who uses AditTrec (davidcgardner@farming.co.uk)
Cheers
Paul
Would be good if those independent reviews made it back onto this forum, if the authors are willing...
Hello all
I'm Paul who works for Leics C C with Darwyn Sumner as a data technician (input, validation, etc.).
I've been assigned to address the problem of getting an appropriate GPS for LCC. We need one that is R6 compatible. I've made a small start into making up a shortlist of suitable handheld devices, but as yet not made any further progress. Any suggestions would be great. I am not all that familiar with such technology. I do realise that one of the easiest ways to transfer data across to R6 is by Excel. But are any of the devices that do this really any good?
Are there any suitable websites for these devices? Are there any ecological data recording devices / software for handheld devices?
Anyway, please let me know by email or on this site of any help or guidance you can give.
Thanks very much & Merry Xmas to all.
Paul
Hi All
I've been using ArcPad for recording species and habitats on a PDA for the last couple of years and this has proven to be a good solution for NESBReC (North East Scotland Biological Records Centre)
I've been planning to create a document covering this trial and will try and get something nailed together over Christmas for early in the New Year.
In the meantime I've uploaded a few screen captures from the PDA which can be found at
http://forums.nbn.org.uk/uploaded/pda.zip
Note one very important thing - to squash as much information onto one screen I'm using a PDA with screen resolution running at 480x640 (iPAQ hx4700)
Cheers

Hardware:
Worth looking at Pocket PCs (running Mobile Windows 5 or 6) with built-in GPS.
Cheap and cheerful start at about £150, with top of the range devices like the HTC/AMEO costing about £500
I agree with Iain about screen size - most of the VGA (640x480) units have very good displays, though none are all that good in bright sunshine.
Software:
If you are looking for some integration with Recorder, you might like to have a look at http://www.aditsite.co.uk/
Choose Products then AditTrec (More)

If you want to define your own recording form try:

I've written a rough guide to NESBReC's experience with ArcPad for species recording which can be found at
http://www.nesbrec.org.uk/articles/PPC%20Recording.pdf
It's not a very detailed account, but does give you an idea of what can be done with ArcPad as a solution for species recording with minimal user input. We find this works very well both for species and habitat recording and integrates well with the desktop software which we use.
Cheers

Thanks for that - looks very interesting. We wanted to try Arcpad for something similar but time has held us back. If you were willing it would be very useful if you made the forms available and they could be adapted by different users.

Not a problem sharing the stuff and the upload link is above. There are a few things you need to be aware of.
Unless you're running in VGA mode you'll only see the top left quarter of each form. Obviously the complete form will be viewable on the desktop version of ArcPad. Also note that I create a toolbar which is used to activate the action buttons on the unit. This toolbar is invisible when using VGA but I have noticed using QVGA that it appears as a blank toolbar. I've never bothered to look into why this is, as it's not something that affects the way we work, but maybe you could let me know of your experiences with this. Also, you'll only see around half the commands on the custom toolbar so you may find it difficult to even quit the application (CTRL-Q will still work). Maybe running in landscape mode will help this a little bit.
That said, the scripting should be functional but be aware that I use numerous scripts in different places to try and 'de-couple' toolbars from projects but I guess you are aware of where files need to go within the ArcPad hierarchy. I've also used a rather unconventional way of creating the APL file for the species list in that I've broken this into page sections so that if a file with .APG is found in the directory this will automatically be added to the tab view at the bottom of the screen - probably best seen by viewing the files in notepad. This file (species.apl) is updated at runtime. This is used to add/remove taxonomic groups without the need for scripting. The function to generate grid references from Eastings/Northings will need a bit of treatment as I only use certain 100km squares here but that should be easy enough to work out.
I've amended the ArcPad application resources to alter the command bar but it's probably 'safer' to just create another custom toolbar and copy across this functionality. You'll probably have to amend a significant proportion of this project to get it to tie in with your way of working - let me know how you get on. Remember to copy all your original ArcPad files as this makes alterations to the standard toolbars.
I've left in some data which is for the north-east of Scotland so at least there is some data there for you to look at.
Let me know how it goes.
cheers
Iain
Thanks Ian - I would point out we haven't got the PDA yet though we do have Arcpad but hopefully this will spur us on.

Hi
Just a quick update on AditTrec
1. Thanks to suggestions from Snowdonia National Park, species lists from 'Rucksacks' can now be imported into the system, and downloaded to your Pocket PC.
2. Tireless testing work by Cheshire LRC has improved the time taken to establish a GPS position, and established a more efficient way of handling multiple species lists with different counting methods.

I can't access any of the documents from the links in this thread. I am logged in but still no joy. Any suggestions, or updated links would be welcome, thanks.
