Re: NBN Exchange - problem with measurements

We use a taxon measurement to hold substrate and position information for lichen records. We call it the scale habitat code (meaning small scale) and it is a way to hold a lot of information in a very abbreviated form, for instance CFx means on an ash tree, XHd means on a headstone in a churchyard, etc. etc.

These codes need to be attached to the taxon occurence record on the Gateway, but there is a problem with the way the NBN Exchange Addin is handling them. Instead of just exporting the code it is adding None Taxon to each code, making a long text string that it then truncates. It gives an error each time:

An internal exception occurred in the NBN Exchange addin in SQL: UPDATE ##nbn_exchange_obs SET [Scale Habitat] = 'CBT None Taxon; CCo None Taxon; CCt None Taxon; CFx None Taxon; CRs None Taxon; CSb None Taxon; CSm None Taxon' WHERE (RecordKey='LC00030500000TK0');
The exception message is: String or binary data would be truncated

I can see why it is doing this for other measurements, but it would be good to have a way to switch off the additional fields when they are not being used. We have already had a special routine developed to do this for reports, will we have to have our own version of the addin developed as well?

Re: NBN Exchange - problem with measurements

Hello Janet

Given the flexiblity of the nbn exchange format with regards to the attribute fields, the generic addin tool used to export records from Recorder 6, may not be able to export these fields correctly for all recording schemes. If you could send me a Recorder 6 export of some records with the scale habitat code I will have a look at the problem and resulting error message.

A similar issue arose with stage attributes for dragonfly records. A workaround here was to send the attribute fields seperately, associated with their taxonoccurrencekeys, so that I could append these fields to the main dataset prior to loading onto the NBN Gateway. This approach could be used for lichen records, if necessary.

Best wishes
