Re: R2K2 addins not loading

Following a change of server, as series of add-ins are no longer loaded.  The error message reads 'The specified module could not be found', but the relevant .OCX and .DLL files are still in the folder with all the rest of the R2K2 files (database, basemaps, rucksacks, settings, recording cards etc etc).

Our ICT chaps have reported  "...we believe there are pieces of code within the application (which we cannot access) which are required to be changed in order to allow the software to run correctly."

Is this the case or is there a way of shuffling the add-ins so that they can be read by the application?

If it's any use, the relevant add-ins are DMAP Export, Filter results to excel, location reports, showunchecked display records and R2K standard validation.

Thanks

Re: R2K2 addins not loading

Hi Matt
There definitely is no code in the application which relies on the addins being in a specific place. The problem is likely to be that the addins are in the Windows Registry and the path has not been updated.
To fix this, you need to find the tool regsvr32.exe (it's normally in c:\windows\system32) and run this against each of the ocx and dll files in the addins folder. One way of doing this is to open 2 Windows Explorer windows and drag and drop the files onto regsvr32.exe. This will need to be done on each client machine.

Let us know how you get on,

Re: R2K2 addins not loading

Thanks for your help John.

I tried what you said and got the following error message for each add-in:-

"DLLRegisterServer in [add-in file location] failed.  Return code was 0x80004005"

Any ideas?

Re: R2K2 addins not loading

0x80004005 error means "access denied", and is usually to do with the lack admin access - what version of windows are you running?

Googling regsvr32 and 0x80004005 together should bring up plenty of "how-tos"

Thanks Charlie...

You need to us a login with local machine administrator rights to register objects with Windows.

Re: R2K2 addins not loading

ICT guy came and tried the fixes but to no avail, suggested we go back to supplier (Dorset Software) but we have no support agreement with them.  Any other suggestions (apart from buy Recroder 6)?

Re: R2K2 addins not loading

Is this not the sort of problem that occurs when users move Recorder from one machine to another? It is best to reinstall v2.3.1 using the latest Recorder 2002 CD, i.e. the coloured one with a bee nectaring on a cowslip on it, then upgrade to v2.3.6.5 then to 2.3.7.8 using the upgrades from http://www.jncc.gov.uk/page-4598 . Installing Recorder 6 on the same machine as Recorder 2002 used to knock out the add-ins but in that case the solution was just to reinstall them from within Recorder 2002 using Tools – Install – Add-in Module…. The ReadMe.txt file that usually accompanies an add-in provides information about installing and using it. There aren’t any on the Recorder 2002 CD for the add-ins that are installed automatically (\Install Files\Addins) but the one for the Go to key add-in (\Extra addins\GoTo Key) is fairly typical and explains what to do about the ‘access is denied’ problem.

If you don’t have a copy of the latest Recorder 2002 installation CD JNCC should be able to supply it. Alternatively, I have a few to spare.

I think most of the Approved Recorder Experts listed on the new JNCC Recorder web-site will provide support for users – see http://www.jncc.gov.uk/page-4611 – although their terms vary. Given the pressure on budgets, many users will probably prefer to try the forum for free support before approaching an approved expert but most responses are provided free of charge so they can only be supplied when time permits. I for one could answer more posts on the forum but paid work has to take priority.
