Re: Installing Recorder 6 on new computer

I have just upgraded the PC but still running Windows XP.  Had successfully done one re-install of Recorder 6.10.4 and was able then attach the database.  However am now having gret problems installing REcorder 6.10.4 onto the new PC.  I have installed SQL SERVER 2005 Express and also SQL Server Management Studio Express.  The installation fails after the reboot of the computer and will not attach the basic database supplied with the software.  I have attempted to update Recorder to 6.13 but this also fails. When the computer attempts to load the databasee I get the message 'An instance of there server is already running' and am unable to progress further.
Anyone able to assist

Re: Installing Recorder 6 on new computer

Hi Sue,

A recent Microsoft HotIfx released in February 2009 appears to have caused this issue with the installation of Recorder.  The install complains that  'An instance of this service is already running'.   This will be resolved in the next release of Recorder.

Until then there is a work around, the SQL server service needs to be stopped before the installation can proceed.  On a standalone install this can usually be carried out by right-clicking and opening the SQL Server Service Manager (from the bottom right notification area  in the Windows taskbar),  then stopping the corresponding SQL Server service.  You should then be able to carry on with the install.

Hope that makes sense,

Re: Installing Recorder 6 on new computer

Many thanks for the information in your post Simon. A customer couldn't complete a network install until I pointed him to this information. The database was created but not attached. They shut down the whole of SQL server, not just one instance, and it worked.

Re: Installing Recorder 6 on new computer

I too had problems installing under SQL Server Express 2005. I found the same error when the connection was being made to the access mdb. I stopped the SQL services, disabled them and rebooted. I tried stopping the instance in SQL Server Management Express Studio. What I found was that stopping the instance was Ok but the installation started it again [or appeared to]. If however I waited untill the installation was under way and then stopped it all went through ok.
So disable SQL Server and SQL Server VSS Writer services [CTRL Pannel, Admin Tools, Services] by setting to manual then stop the instance after the installation has started. You probably need to set the services to automatic again. I'm still setting up the permissions and a workstation but it did say it has installed and it's all there in the management tool. It may not work though, that's my next test. :-)

Re: Installing Recorder 6 on new computer

Well I have a server running but I can't get any workstation to see the system. I get this error
before any prompt.

Has anyone any suggestions?
