I am running some xml reports that extract large volumes of records, and need to export the results so that they can be used elsewhere. One of these reports outputs about 80k records which is too many for Excel so I have been trying to export to MS Access. Every time it falls over with the same error 'Error of data export: Access violation at address 0081E964 in module RecorderApp.Exe. Read of address 00000000'.

I can get round this by exporting to a txt file and then importing that into Access, but then the dates are converted to integers and the second date of any date range is lost so that leads to more difficulties. Export to rtf might get round that one but Word can't open the file to convert it to a format that could be read into Access so I don't know.

Any suggestions?

What version of Excel are you using? Excel 2007 has a limit of 1,048,576 rows whereas previous versions had a limit of 65,536 rows - see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/120596. Have you tried Excel 2007?

Can't afford it!

Thanks for the suggestion though, I didn't know that it handled so many more records. This could solve another problem we have so I will look into it.

You can download a free trial version I believe which may allow you to export to it temporarily before moving the records on to Access - as a temporary solution.

Hi Janet,

Would it be of any use to to export your results to multiple Excel files, then trying the import into an Access database?
This functionality is availble when using the “Export to Other Formats” functionality, then selecting Excel file from the available formats, you can then specify the  number of records per file (on the screen where you specify the output file name).

            As the BLS is a charity they will quailify to buy software at educational rates. I,m assuming you are doing this work for them.  Check out  http://www.sam-uk.org/software-licensing-charities-organisations.html
