Re: ArcMap fails to launch

This is not a recorder related issue but hopefully someone out there may have some ideas that could help us out.
We use ArcView (Version 8.3) to map info we hold on Recorder so we can screen planning applications and provide wildlife information to consultancies. At the end of October ArcView decided to break and we have been forced to use a complicated workaround. I was asked to fix the problem but so far have drawn a blank.
ArcView and Recorder 6 are installed on the same machine. We can open ArcCatelog but when we try to open ArcMap the splash screen appears and then promptly disappears. No error message pops up and task manager shows no sign of ArcMap running, either in the applications or the processes tab.
I have looked at the ESRI Forum and have followed advice on this http://forums.esri.com/Thread.asp?c=93& … mp;t=90165 thread, except for the upgrade of MDAC (I didn’t want to mess up Recorder and our version is more up-to-date than the one suggested in the fix).
I’m at the stage now where the only thing I can think of is to re-install XP but this will obviously be time consuming and disruptive. I’m also reluctant to re-install windows because I still don’t know what caused ArcView to start acting up and therefore cannot be sure that the re-install will fix the problem.
If anyone out there has any ideas on how to fix this or what the underlying cause might be, I’d be more than grateful to hear from you.
