Hi All

This is not a recorder related issue but hopefully someone out there may have some ideas that could help us out.

We use ArcView (Version 8.3) to map info we hold on Recorder so we can screen planning applications and provide wildlife information to consultancies. At the end of October ArcView decided to break and we have been forced to use a complicated workaround. I was asked to fix the problem but so far have drawn a blank.

ArcView and Recorder 6 are installed on the same machine. We can open ArcCatelog but when we try to open ArcMap the splash screen appears and then promptly disappears. No error message pops up and task manager shows no sign of ArcMap running, either in the applications or the processes tab.

I have looked at the ESRI Forum and have followed advice on this  http://forums.esri.com/Thread.asp?c=93& … mp;t=90165 thread, except for the upgrade of MDAC (I didn’t want to mess up Recorder and our version is more up-to-date than the one suggested in the fix).

I’m at the stage now where the only thing I can think of is to re-install XP but this will obviously be time consuming and disruptive. I’m also reluctant to re-install windows because I still don’t know what caused ArcView to start acting up and therefore cannot be sure that the re-install will fix the problem.

If anyone out there has any ideas on how to fix this or what the underlying cause might be, I’d be more than grateful to hear from you.

Have you tried double-clicking on an MXD? Does that force ArcMap to open? Have you done anything with your printers recently? E.g., added a new one, removed an old one, or updated the drivers?

a double-click on an mxd gives the same splash screen and crash.

We have had problems with the printer on the ArcView machine but apparently ArcMap opened fine for a few months while the printer connection wasn't functioning. I saw a couple of posts on the ESRI forum about printers so deleted and re-added all the printers to the "Printers and Faxes" list. I have also uninstalled the printer software and re-installed it without success.

We have an HP printer, via another machine in the work group, and cutepdf working. The HP printer is not seen by the ArcView machine when we try to install it. I initially thought that the ArcMap problem was connected to the printer problem until Sara mentioned that ArcMap had worked before with the printer setup we have now.

In that case, I'm out of ideas I'm afraid. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Are you able to contact ESRI support directly? I assume you don't have maintenance otherwise you'd be on 9.2 or 9.3?

Not to worry.
I did call ESRI and they told me that our version of ArcView had been retired (Version 8.3), so no support available from them. Perhaps a maintenance contract is in order...
