Re: Stand Alone 6.13 Database Migration Application Error

Hi folks, Im brand new here.

I recieved my standalone copy of Recorder 6 version 6.13 today.

I have tried to install and have had to uninstall 2 or 3 times as i keep getting to a certain point and getting an error which i dont understand im afraid as im not a computer whizz.

So...i go through the install process..creating a new instance of MSDE (whatever that is) at that point as it appears i dont already have one...the rest of the install goes fine up to the point you click 'finish' and the pc reboots...and yes i left the disc in...
It then goes onto attach the NBN data file ok...but the next step throws up this error and the pc hangs:

' Recorder database set up: Creating Access Link File.
The SQL server tables are being linked into a local access database....Please wait.....'

and shortly after this error pops up in a new window " Recorder Database Migration. A critical error has occured in Recorder Database Migration application, click the more details button if you require further info...."

on clicking the more info button i get:

"Exception occurred in application recorder database migration at 05/07/2008 and the time...
Version 6.13.2.172
Exception path:
EOleException: Cannot open a database with a previous version"

and it hangs on that....all you can do is click the red x to close at which point it tells you doing this may mean the software may encounter problems etc.

any ideas what this is all about?..especially the 'cannot open a databse with a previous version?'...what exactly is this part of the process trying to do? the Recorder Database Migration part?...

if it helps and it could be the reason not that i understand these things but my local Biological records centre (Kent and Medway) KMBRC have not yet updated to recorder 6 and are still using 2002...is this part of the problem?

Incidentally...not that i have learned how to use it properly yet but if i click the recorder icon it all opens ok and lets me in with my password so the main software appears to run ok? however, before, during and after install if i clicked on the "Getting started" icon on the desktop it wouldnt open "shortcut missing"? so i had to print one off from this forum.

Sorry for my extremely long message...any help would be great.

Re: Stand Alone 6.13 Database Migration Application Error

Hi Dan,

The good news is that having got to this stage, the only thing left to do for the install kit is create an Access database file which can be used to report on the data in the Recorder application. Everything else is done. Also, this Access database file does not get used by the core Recorder project at all, though it's absence might affect one or two addins.

Another useful thing to know is that when this problem is sorted, in Recorder 6.13 it is possible to recreate the Access database file using the following command line:
D:\System\DBPlugin.exe /standalone "/installdir:C:\Program Files\Recorder 6\" /mdb

Note that this assumes the CD is in your D drive (change the drive letter if not) and that you are installing to the standard installation folder of Program Files\Recorder 6. Also, make sure you get the /mdb correct at the end. If not, then you will get prompted if you want to overwrite your NBNdata database - make sure you click No on this message as this means you have got the command line wrong and the tool is about to "factory reset" your database.

Back to the original problem - it's not one I've come across before but it would be helpful to know which operating system (XP, Vista etc) you are using, and if you have any version of Microsoft Access installed on the PC.

Thanks

How would i find out if i had microsoft access already? (Sorry...im good at wildlife but not a computer whizz)

Also...im a bit worried why i cant open the getting started file...which would be blooming helpful at this stage? it just keeps saying there is no 'link' and then searches for it but finds nothing...can someone re send me the file online or can i download the getting started file somewhere?

Re: Stand Alone 6.13 Database Migration Application Error

Hi Dan
No apologies needed. The Getting Started guide shortcut requires the CD to be left in the drive. It is at <cd drive>:\Getting Started\Recorder Getting Started Guide.chm so you can load it directly without the shortcut if necessary.
To check if Microsoft Access is installed, select All Programs from the Start menu, then Microsoft Office (if it is present). If you have Access installed there will be a program in this folder called something like Microsoft Office Access depending on which version it is (mine says Microsoft Office Access 2003 for example).

I've had a look around for the problem you mention, and apparently it can occur if there is a problem with the setup of one of the Windows libraries required by Recorder. There is a Microsoft Knowledgebase article at the following location:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.as … -us;310804

It's probably a good idea to get some assistance with doing these changes, as messing around with your registry is a sure way of ruining your system.

I hope that helps, let us know how you get on,

Re: Stand Alone 6.13 Database Migration Application Error

I guess the answer is no as i uninstalled then re installed the new version but still get the same error=(

Re: Stand Alone 6.13 Database Migration Application Error

Sorry Dan, but the new disk relates to a different issue. Your particular issue seems to be a problem with a library used by Recorder (a standard Microsoft one) rather than with Recorder itself, so we can't really fix it from our end.

Re: Stand Alone 6.13 Database Migration Application Error

Hi Dan

You should be fine to start using Recorder. Just to make sure, try starting it up, then select Tools\Database Tools\Backup Database from the menu. Confirm this then it should take a few minutes. If that works it proves you are able to backup the database, so in the future if you are about to do something that might affect your installation, you can always back it up just beforehand in case anything goes wrong. If it does go wrong, once you have Recorder working again you can always restore the database which is quite an easy process.

Re: Stand Alone 6.13 Database Migration Application Error

I have a stand alone copy of Recorder 6 on a Vista PC. I have just run the upgrade from V6.10.4 to 6.13.3. I had to run it in Administrator mode but it worked and gave me an upgrade complete message. When I fire up Recorder I get an error "Error accessing the OLE registry." Restarting the application does not help. Re-booting the PC does not help. Is this a known problem with Vista? Re: Stand Alone 6.13 Database Migration Application Error

After the upgrade, for the first time you run Recorder on Vista rather than starting Recorder.exe, run the file called RecorderApp.exe using the Run as Administrator option. This will allow the application to make the necessary changes to the registry. You only need to do this once on each machine.

Re: Stand Alone 6.13 Database Migration Application Error

I got this error message in Windows XP which caused a minor moment of panic but having followed John's instructions all is working fine now.
