Topic: problem installing Workstation copy

I am trying to install a networked copy of Recorder on to a linked workstation and the install goes OK until it has almost finished, then it just stops and will not complete the install (see image) - pressing cancel partly uninstalls but re-running has the same result (note it did work the first-time but needed to be uninstalled because of problems and reinstall did not work from that point onwards

Re: problem installing Workstation copy

I think this might be a symptom of a MUCH bigger problem - I now cannot run Recorder on any of the previously working workstations (except one which was running since first thing yesterday (i.e. just over 24 hrs) this copy is still running fine, but I daren't exit in case I can't get back in)

The error message previously working copies are reporting is:
"Application cannot start
Out of system resources"

Re: problem installing Workstation copy

I have aked John van Breda for some help with this, but unfortunately he is out of the office until  12 Dec.  I will take a look at the code to see what is going on at the point where R6 fails to see if this  helps identify why this is happening.

Re: problem installing Workstation copy

It is unclear from the code whether it is geting stuck while copying files or immediately after that when it registers Recorder 6 on the workstation. Why all workstation are affected is mystery. R6 is running on the  workstation, so any memory problems should be restricted to just the one workstation and should go away on a reboot. Apart from the database and shared files on the server, the workstations are running independently of  one another.   However, the message may be spurious. Is eveything OK with the database. Can you access it through Management Studio. I don't think this will be the problem, but just want to eliminate the possibility. It could be that  the R6 program itself has become corrupted. This would explain the situation apart from the problem of installing on a new workstation. I attach the latest(6.25)  .exe file and suggest that you copy this onto the server to replace the file that is already there (rename the existing file first so you can revert back if required). Then try to open R6 from one of the workstations which isn't currently working.  This shouldn't stop the existing running workstation from continuing to work.

Re: problem installing Workstation copy

Further information is that it appears that 2gb of data has 'disappeared' from the Recorder folder since first thing yesterday (when a backup was taken), no idea how this could have happened, but I am currently copying the missing data back from a backup (taken yesterday morning) and I'll see if this cures the problems

Hope this solves the problem. If the install still isn't working let me know. I have some ideas on what to try next.

Re: problem installing Workstation copy

Mike,

The database appears fine, both because it is still running in the copy which is running and has done a 60,000 record import and it can be viewed OK in SQL Management Studio

I can't try your new copy of the RecorderApp.exe, Windows will not allow me to rename the existing file - I assume it is locked by the copy of Recorder which is still running

The restore is still running with 21hrs (Microsoft time!) to go

Re: problem installing Workstation copy

Just a thought, could it be something the Recorder.EXE requires to initialise the system before RecorderApp starts, that would explain why the running copy is fine, but no new instances can be started!

Interestingly trying to run Recorder direct on the server gives a different error message - "Application cannot start. Main application file problem."

Re: problem installing Workstation copy

I have restarted the Windows Server and the RecorderApp.exe disappeared! Copying you replacement in worked and Recorder started, but it failed on all its addins, I have reinstaled them all and it appears to be up and running again
