Topic: Problems with importing

We have recently upgraded to Recorder 6.24, and are now having problems with importing. 

If we choose to search all preferred checklists when matching the species name, Recorder crashes on the final import.  If we search each checklist individually it is fine.

The problem seems to mainly affect one computer - my colleague tried to import some data (only 16 records) and chose to search all preferred checklists, so Recorder crashed.  When she tried to import the data again, she searched each checklist individually but it still crashed on the final import. 

I tried with the same records - it crashed if I searched all preferred checklists, but was OK if I searched each checklist individually.  I've pasted in the error message below

Has anyone got any suggestions?

We've just had another go at importing, and have the same problem.  It seems to crash right at the final stage, when it is checking for duplicates.  However, it doesn't affect all computers, as it works OK on mine.

Any suggestions anyone?

I have been trying to work out what could have changed between 6.23 and 6.24 to cause this problem. V 6.24 was a very small upgrade which  as far as I can see did not affect importing.   It looks like it is failing when it tries to create a linked table, but how this relates to the 6.24 upgrade is a mystery at the moment. It looks like the users can not create the linked table (linking Ms Access to SQl Server) this could be some form of permissions problem or something missing in their workstation install. I will seek advice from John van Beda.


Can you confirm that the users affected can do all normal operations on R6, like adding records to the observations hierarchy.

This may be un-related but i fairly frequently encounter that error;

exception class   : EOleException
exception message : The Microsoft Jet database engine could not find the object ''. Make sure the object exists and that you spell its name and the path name correctly


It is sometimes to do with user permissions or, more frequently, the network being jittery (even a working but inactive (sleeping) network connection can cause it).

Also, in the past i have found the spreadsheet itself has been to blame. The issue was resolved by copying the data into a new excel spreadsheet. There were no obvious restrictions but for some reason R6 just wouldn't import from that particular sheet. Probably something within it i was unable to find.

The two affected computers seem OK otherwise - we regularly use Recorder 6 on both machines, and don't have any problems entering data using the record cards, or editing data.  One computer is used by our Data Officer, who uses Recorder every day.  She hasn't had any problems entering data using recording cards, editing data or exporting data. 

The other is used by volunteers, and is mainly used to enter data using recording cards.  This one has started has started freezing if Recorder is left unattended (e.g. at lunch) so we have to make sure that people save their data entry regularly.  This problem has also started since we upgraded Recorder.

Recorder seems to be fine on my computer, and I have been able to import spreadsheets that have crashed on the other two computers.  I haven't had a chance to check Recorder on other computers in the office; Recorder isn't used so often on those computers so no-one has noticed a problem.

I did have problems installing the upgrade this time, as we have a new server.

It turns out that it was a problem with permissions - something wasn't set up properly when we moved to the new server.  We can all import data now.
