Topic: Backup Error Problem

I have not been running Recorder 6 upgrades or Dictionary upgrades for about twelve months due to my hard-drive nearly reaching full capacity (too many images).   A few weeks ago I had the complete hard-drive’s contents moved to a much larger hard-drive using Casper.   All appeared to be working fine, including Recorder 6.
However, the other day I tried to run Recorder 6 backup database prior to running Recorder 6/Dictionary upgrades.  I was repeatedly given the message ‘unknown backup error: 3268’.  Whether or not this error was present prior to the transfer I cannot say.

After a few tries I was called away from my computer, which I foolishly left running.  To my dismay on my return I found that it had automatically started running the Windows 7 to Windows 10 upgrade.   I left it to run.    To my relief Recorder 6 appears to be working and will accept records and Reports seem to work.   However, the above 3268 error remains.

The recorder version is 6.22.2.274; Dict 0000002v on MS SQL10_50.SQLEXPRESS

Any suggestions?

Re: Backup Error Problem

Not an error I have seen before. It appears to be something to do with the format of the backup file.  Rename the existing backup file and try again. If this doesn't work try moving the backup to a new location (Tools/Database Tools/View or Change Backup Location). See also http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?id=6123

Re: Backup Error Problem

Dear Mike

Thanks for suggestion but I had tried (Tools/Database Tools/View or Change Backup Location).

On several tries I have received the message 'The backup operation cannot complete because the backup device location can't be opened'.

Your other suggestion through Management Studio.  Sorry to be rather thick but I am not sure what this is, nor where/how to find Server Objects.

Regards

Peter

Re: Backup Error Problem

If you open Management Studio and connect to the Server then you should see something like the attached. Open server object and follow the instruction for removing and setting up the backup device again.

Re: Backup Error Problem

Sorry, its Management Studio I am not sure about, is it something I should have within SQL/Recorder 6 or do I need to download it?

Re: Backup Error Problem

Searched for Management Studio through Windows 10, it found it but when I investigated it stated that SQL Management Studio had stopped working.

Do you suggest I re-load, if so which version?

Re: Backup Error Problem

Load the SQL Server 2014 version. You should  be able to find this without the rest of SQL Server on the Microsoft web site. If you are not sure about which version when you go into the MS site  let me know and I will take a more detailed look

Re: Backup Error Problem

Hello Mike

Tried to load SQL Management Studio 2014 through Microsoft link giving 2012 -2014.  Ended up with 2012 version.  Despite deleting NBNData_Backup and re-entering as instructed previously, I am still getting the same error.  It appears that I un-wittingly downloaded MSSQL10_50.SQLEXPRESS.

When I go into Recorder 6 and try to change backup location I cannot drill down below Recorder 6.

I observe this is a problem others have had and resolved by changing Authorisation or similar.  Have tried but not sure how they did it.

Any further thoughts?

Re: Backup Error Problem

MSSQL10_50  is SQL Server 2008 R2. This should  be fine.  Management Studio 2012 should  also work with this.

Can you confirm that  you deleted the  existing  NBNData_Backup device and set it up again as per the instructions at http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?id=6123

Can you backup up through Management Studio ?  In management Studio right click on NBNData and choose backup. (see screenshot). If this doesn't work or gives error messages then let me know. Looks like permissions somewhere and this may help to pin it down.

Re: Backup Error Problem

Thanks for the speedy reply.  Re: your second para, I can confirm I followed these several times before and after downloading Management Studio.

Will try to back up through Management Studio later today or tomorrow when I am likely to have no family interruptions.  Could the permission issue have arisen when I re-loaded following the Dictionary Up-grade issue I had - do you recall?

Re: Backup Error Problem

Don't think so. Could be a problem with accessing the location of the backup file. Have you tried changing the location of the backup file.  To be honest not sure what this is at the moment. Follow up on this may be  a bit slow after Sunday as I will be on holiday with limited internet access.

Re: Backup Error Problem

Morning Mike

Backup failed, the message given was  'because it was originally formatted with sector size 512 and is now on a device with sector size 4096'.

However, I am not sure this is the whole store, the problem existed prior to hard-drive change.

Re: Backup Error Problem

Internet suggest that you need to remove the backup file, or backup to a new location.

Hello Mike

If you are back from Holiday, I have not got anywhere yet with my Backup problem.
Any further thoughts?

Re: Backup Error Problem

After re-loading/up-grading to SQL 2014 then deleting NBNData_Backup and re-loading I have managed to get the Backup to work as sorts.

It appears to be willing to save to a file in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server,  but not elsewhere; I cannot get Recorder 6 to drill-down to other files, i.e. Program data/Recorder6/Backup.

Any thoughts?

Please can you give me a screenshot of what R6 shows when you go to Change Backup location.

Re: Backup Error Problem

Thanks. The drives box should be populated and I am not sure why it isn't. It is OK on my Windows 10 system. For the moment I have logged it as a bug.
