Topic: Mapping in Europe

Has anyone given any thought to using Recorder to manage records in Europe?
For mapping in QGIS all one really needs is an output list that has the two lat long columns (doesn't really matter which columns as long as they can find their way into an excel output)
I haven't got very far, just a location "Europe" with a false grid reference somewhere off the south coast.
What fields could be used for lat long outside the UK?

You can just use Lat/Long, but if mixed with UK grid refs it needs to be OSGB 36 not WGS84.  Recorder can work with Lat/Long in the spatial reference field. See tools Options/Spatial ref. There are some users who work the this way in order to record  data outside the OSGB area.

Re: Mapping in Europe

Thanks both. The GBIF methodology (http://www.plosone.org/article/fetchObj … tation=PDF) has been driving me round the bend, it's just not aimed at the likes of us naturalists.
I'll look at what I can get out of Mike's suggestion first, learning German's a bit much.

Re: Mapping in Europe

Well I succeeded, to the point where I was able to give a presentation about it at the recent NFBR conference.

A combination of Recorder 6, QGIS, free geospatial datasets, a good pdf/citation manager and a lot of hunting down of papers containing georeferenced locations for my taxa.
The Powerpoint does try to present the topic of mapping in Europe in a sequence of tasks, though the detail is limited given the 10 mins limit to my talk.
Whilst there's not much mention of Recorder 6 in there I really don't see how one could do without it for this kind of job. In particular its ability to manage location details in a structured manner.
Extending mapping of certain species beyond our shores does have value in terms of conservation.
Contact me if you want to know exactly how to do this kind of stuff.
