Topic: can I have 2 versions of recorder 6

Hi

I have a database for birds that I am developing for a bird observatory and I would also like to use recorder for a separate organisation to record moths.  I thought that the easiest way would be to install recorder twice but when I came to the bit about over writing the database I aborted the process.
I know have 2 recorder 6 (the second called 61) on my c drive which both open to the same user name even though I used a separate site ID.

I seem to have got myself in a bit of a mess!  Can you help please?

Sorry. Recorder will only install once on a machine, because it can only one set of registry settings. What you can do is to have two separate databases. It needs a lot more detailed consideration, but basically  you need to install  an additional instance of SQL Server and reinstall  R6 referring to this new instance so that it sets up a blank database, with a new site id.  You will  then need a method of switching the registry entries.  I know some users have an  automated process to do this, but as I have  never set one up I can't advise on this. The good news is that your database appears to be intact.  Removing the second install of R6 may be a bit tricky without causing problems. Removing it through control panel will probably remove the registry entries for both versions.  The simplest thing will be to live with the fact that you have the software installed twice and  remove the shortcut to the second version, so you don't accidentally use it. Alternatively you can do a manual delete. Probably  Ok just to delete the contents of the new Recorder 6 folder  (61) as well as the shortcut. , but I need to give this a bit more careful consideration.

Hi Mike

I have decided, as you to say, to live with it but what appears to have happened is that recorder is finding things from the new folder (61).  So I have had to move my rucksacks etc there.

This isn't a problem but there is a big BUT.

I can no longer edit any of my data.  Presumably recorder has picked up the new site ID and therefore does not allow me to edit.  This is the case for all of the data that is currently on the system.

When I go into the files on the c drive/programs 86 it will not open the recorder 6 app from the old fiel but will from the new recorder 61 file.

Can you help?

Does seem to be a bit  more muddled than I would have thought.  It may have deleted  part of the original install before doing  the second one.

As far as the site Id is concerned. What is help (Help/Summary Info) showing as your site id.   If it is the new one then it has been changed  in the database. How best to fix this will depend on   what tools you have available.  If you have Management  Studio then you can run a query in there to fix things - the site id is only in one place. If not then I can provide a batch update.

Don't put in  any new data until it is fixed.

It is showing the old one.

Now I am really confused as I definitely can't edit me data and obviously I could before

You must think that I am a real pain - I have just gone back in to double check and have found that I can now edit the data.  I'm really sorry - I had tried several times before I contacted you and things were not working.

I'm beginning to wish I never started this!

That is confusing. Have a look at  Tools/User Configuration to see what  access level you have,

It is always better to ask for help than to struggle. I certainly don't mind providing  help. What matters is that you have a working system and haven't lost any data.

I have tried running two copies on one machine, but it is confusing and easy to forget to switch regisitry or take copies when needed. I decided the best option was to purchase a separate secondhand laptop for the second system.  Recorder will install and runs fine with a reasonable size database on older Vista/Win 7 or Win 8 machines, which can be found fairly cheaply (under £100.00 in my case).
