Topic: .XLM File Import Failure

I've been sent an XLM file from a fellow Recorder user to allow me to add his records to mine. Unfortunately, the import process quickly failed with the attached error report. Can you tell me what the problem is?

Re: .XLM File Import Failure

I don't know too  much about how this works. XML import hasn't changed in a long time as we have avoided touching it. I have run a quick test exporting and reimporting the data and it works OK. The error message suggests that it isn,t reading the document definitition. Can you try exporting a very small amount of data (say an event) in xml format and then attempt a reimport. All records should  show as duplicates and you can abandon it at this point. Let me know how far you can get.

Re: .XLM File Import Failure

Hi Mike,

As with you, I managed to export a small batch of records as an XML and then tried to import back again. This worked for me too and I cancelled it once the duplicates were reported. Would sending you the other user's file help?

Happy to take a look at the file.

Re: .XLM File Import Failure

Steve, is the file extension XML or XLM? The latter is a type of Excel Spreadsheet.

Re: .XLM File Import Failure

Hi Charlie,

The file extension is .XML. I don't have access to Recorder at the moment but I think it is one of the file type options under the Export function and is called something like "NBN data" or something similar.

Re: .XLM File Import Failure

The file is not  R6 XML output, but looks like it could be the XML output which  is part of a NBN Gateway export. Possibly who ever sent it has just picked up the wrong file or they could have run the wrong export.

Re: .XLM File Import Failure

I assume it's not the metadata XML from a report wizard export?

Re: .XLM File Import Failure

Header format is as follows

<Metadata version="2.1" datestamp="21/01/2016" gatewayId="XXXXXXXX">
  <DatasetTitle>XXXXXXX</DatasetTitle>

Re: .XLM File Import Failure

Yeah, that's the (optional) XML header for the NBN exchange format (http://www.nbn.org.uk/Share-Data/Provid … eader.aspx)

Re: .XLM File Import Failure

Thanks for this, I'll go back to the supplier of the file and try and sort out a better means of records supply.
