Topic: Missing OS Map Tiles

Hi,

I hope this hasn't been covered in a previous topic but using the search hasn't thrown anything up. I am running a stand alone Recorder at home and at some stage in the past have successfully installed some of the OS map tiles into it. I have tried to add some more tiles but after apparently done so successfully, i.e. no error messages, the tiles aren't appearing when I open the mapping window. The old ones are still there but there is no sign of the newly loaded ones. My laptop is running under Windows 10 and Recorder is up to date with the update versions.

Where should I be looking for the newly loaded map tiles? Presumably, the NBN Map Browser has a default area it places the tiles or is this too simplistic! Do I need to be looking for nbndata.mdb?

Re: Missing OS Map Tiles

This could be a problem with Windows 10 running  the NBN software which loads the tiles. This software not part of Recorder and  is no longer being supported.  First thing to do is to see if you have the .gsf files.  They should  be in the Map Files folder.  Where this is  depends on when  you installed Recorder.  Possibly in   C:\ProgramData\Recorder 6\Map Files\. If you can't find them search your system for .gsf files. The OS map tiles have names which identify the area covered. If  the .gsf files for your new tiles are there then you can load them manually. If these haven't been generated then let me know and we will look for another solution. For example the NBN software may work if run under compatibility mode.

Re: Missing OS Map Tiles

Thanks Mike,

They were exactly where you suggested, as were all the previous files I could see in the map window. Presumably, the map file loading process isn't working fully under Windows 10.

I can see that I can load them one at a time using the adding background layers option. Is there a way of adding them all in one go?

Re: Missing OS Map Tiles

The bulk load addin is designed to load Map Tiles in gsf format. http://jncc.defra.gov.uk/page-4597 I  haven't any recent experience of using it, but as far as I know it works.

I'll give it a try.

Re: Missing OS Map Tiles

I fear something is going wrong with my Recorder setup. Having installed the bulk load addin, apparently successfully, I found the addin in the Map menu and set it to load a few of the map tiles I wanted to load. It did this and reported they had been loaded ok. However, the tiles didn't appear alongside the tiles loaded earlier and the bulk load addin has disappeared from map menu, but I found that it was present in the list of installed addins. I tried to un-install the addin and then restore it but this failed due to my not having sufficient permissions! I've given up on this for the time being as I can install the tiles one by one if necessary.

Then last night I tried to import some records from an Excel file. This worked as normal up to the point I validated the columns of the spreadsheet which received a zero errors message but I couldn't get beyond this point as the NEXT choice was greyed out so I had to cancel the import. I haven't retried the import yet but I am beginning to think I may need to restore Recorder to an earlier point.

Re: Missing OS Map Tiles

It is possible that the Map Tile addin doesn't work. It is very old (2006) and I have never looked at it. Probably, needs reviewt. Can you still load the tiles manually ?

I don't think the import problem is related. If the records validate on the import and next doesn't show then this can be because you have a field in the import which has a dependency on another field which is not there.

Re: Missing OS Map Tiles

Hi Mike,

Yes, I can still load the tiles singly so that's fine if tedious - at least they are not critical to load.

I'll have play with the spreadsheet and see if I can work out which field(s) is causing the problem.

Thanks for the advice!
