Topic: Backup not working

When attempting to Backup, receive message 'The backup operation cannot complete because the backup device location cannot be opened'.

Windows 10, Backup location set to C:\Program Files (x86)\Recorder 6\

I read the FAQ. In Server Management Studio the Backup Device is set to NBNData_backup and points to the correct directory.

Re: Backup not working

Probably a permission issue. Program folders are a  special case in Windows 8 and 10 are as far as permissions are concerned.   See if Recorder 6 will allow you to move the backup to a folder where there are no permission issues . Tools/Database Tools/View or Change Backup Locations.

Re: Backup not working

Hi Mike
The other problem is that the backup folder selection window won't drill down more than one level, so I can't actually use a subfolder in Documents, which is the other obvious place to put it. See screenshot attached.

Re: Backup not working

You can use Mangement Studio to set the backup location, however, you first need  to delete the backup device. Then follow the instructions at http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?id=6123 to set up the backup at the location you want.

Re: Backup not working

By changing the folder permissions on C:\Program Files (x86)\Recorder 6\ and running R6 as an administrator, it finally allowed me to take a backup.

Re: Backup not working

It isn't clear to me why the installation put the backup in program files in the first place and will investigate this. Also there doesn't seem to be any reason why users should be prevented from drilling down to find a suitable folder. Probably, left over from the days when folder structures were not so complicated.
