Topic: Phenology

I have been trying to use the Phenology Add-in. I have opened a survey where the data has been imported from Mapmate into Recorder. I have also opened the Phenology window. I have dragged and dropped a species into the latter window and a it has responded by recognising the species. However it also comes up with the window stating no occurrences of the taxon have been recorded. Which is not so! Please see attachment. What am I doing wrong?

Re: Phenology

I don't think this works from the Survey hierarchy. Go into Taxon Dictionary Browser - select your species in the checklist hierarchy then drag that into the Phenology window and it should work....

Re: Phenology

Thanks!  Yes it does work now, just as you say. I did find an extra catch in that I had to identify the species from the same dictionary as the entry. I obtained the same 'null' result if I didn't, which stresses to me how important the Dictionary is in Recorder. It is a shame that there is no mapping between dictionaries or additional searching based on species name.

Re: Phenology

I expect the phenology add was written before we had proper mapping between dictionaries. Possibly it could be looked  a, if there is the demand.

Re: Phenology

I think Phenology works if you use a species name from preferred index.
It would be good if it could map between dictionaries. It would be good if it could plot records across a whole survey etc. or be offered as an option at the end of the Report Wizard.
I'd like to see the functionality of this add-in improved and would be happy to support it if others are also interested.

Re: Phenology

I thin Phenology is an important component and so I welcome the add in and would also like to see it developed further.

Re: Phenology

I have done some work on the Phenology addin and a revised version is attached  for anyone interested. The old version should be removed via R6 and R6 closed and reopened before this one is installed. With a reasonable amount of data it produces some interesting results.

The improvements are that it will work from the Dictionary and Observation hierarchy. Also it now works on the Recommended Name and it will include all  taxa related to the Recommended name  of the starting taxa irrespective of  dictionary. As it accesses the data in a different way it may not suffer problems with large numbers of records which was a reported fault with the previous version.

Note that if a higher level in the Taxonomic hierarchy is selected (eg a class) then the results will include all taxa below the chosen level.  However, the starting point needs to a valid level  - some are not. Usually those on  preferred lists (top of the lists)  are valid. Choosing Biota (from the Marine Species of British Isles checklist) should find all records.

It now has the option to select based on a range of years and can also produce a Histogram for all records in survey. Read the 'Read Me'  file for  details

However, this version does not have the ability to set any Constraints (Don't think this worked anyway) and it can not be exported to Excel. These features could be added back in if there is a need for them.

Seems to work Ok, but let me know of any problems. Also if there is any additional features you would like.

Re: Phenology

I've installed the new Phenology add-in to give it a go. When I select Set Options the window is not visible. I know it's there somewhere because I can see it on the task bar behind the Recorder icon at the bottom of my screen. Any ideas?

Re: Phenology

I did manage to duplicate this.  On some machines its seems window is being opened off screen. I have made a slight change to the addin. The original download in this post has been updated, so if you download and install this again, hopefully this will solve the problem.
