Topic: Upgrade to Windows 10

My laptop upgraded to Windows 10 last night (despite me scheduling it not to run till the weekend), and now Recorder 6 doesn't work. I'm on the latest version, and SQL Server 2008.
Attempting to start R6 gives the message EOleException: [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen(Commat()] SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
Attempting to connect using SQLServer MSE gives the message Cannot connect to JANET-LAPTOP\SQLEXPRESS, and goes on to say that the server was not found or was not accessible, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified. A box flashes up to say that this version of SQLServer is not compatible with Windows 10.
Presumably that means I will have to install a different version of SQLServer, but which and how to do I go about it?

Hi Janet

Just so I can be a bit more specific with my advice can you tell me what Windows version you were upgrading from and is machine a 32 or 64 bit. I would advise installing  SQl Server 2014.  SQL server 2008  doesn't like being installed under Windows 10, but I was hoping it would continue to work if it was already installed.

I was on Windows 8.1, and it's 64-bit.

Thanks. Not good news that Sql Server 2008  doesn't run after the upgrade. Someone else reported that it worked, but may be down to the version of SQL server 2008. I suggest that you install Sql Server 2014. The download link is on Recorder6.info (see previous post).  The instruction for installing it can also be downloaded from ' click here' on this page.  I would be grateful if you could let me know if you see any errors in these instructions.

As the  Server 2008 instance shouldn't be running you should  be able to attach the SQl Server 2008 database to the new Sql server 2014 instance - it would be worth copying the files (NBNdata_data and the log file)  from the SQl Server2008 data folder to the SQL server 2014 data  location.

You can then change the Server Name in R6  registry setting in HKey Local Machine/Software/Wow6432Node/Dorset Software/Recorder  to the name of the SQl 2014 instance.

There is still a lot to learn about this so your feedback would be appreciated.

I have just upgraded my Test Windows 8.1 laptop running Sql server 2008 R2 to Windows 10. R6 and Management Studio work fine. As the other person who has reported that a laptop with this configuration has upgraded, this suggests that Sql server 2008 is Ok. I have reverted  the PC back to Windows 8.1 and this worked Ok.

You could also look at upgrading SQl Server  instead of installing a new instance. I haven't tried this, but it looks fairly easy to do - is it ever !!!!

Before doing anything drastic I tried the old windows trick of shutting down and restarting a few times, and each time windows applied more updates. It still hasn't finished, but now SQLServer 2008 is running again, and so is Recorder, so I'll leave well alone for now.

Janet,

You don't have to rely on the Restart to force Windows-10 updates.  Go into Settings (from your Start button) and click on the "Update & Security" link.  The click on the "Check for updates" button.

Another problem with SQLServer 2008 R2 since the Windows 10 upgrade has come to light.
The SQLserver service seems to have stopped, as since yesterday I have been getting the "SQLServer does not exist or access denied" error on attempting to start Recorder or connect with MSE. That used to happen from time to time so I went to SQLServer Configuration Manager to restart the service as usual, only to find that the configuration manager has disappeared. Has anyone else used it since going to windows 10?
Looks like I will have to upgrade to SQLServer 2014 after all.

If you type in 'Services' in the Windows 10 search box this should bring up near the top of the list 'View Local Services' . Clicking on this will open up a list of local services and in there you should find SQL Server Services. I think you should  be able to start the service there. At the moment I don't know why Configuration Manager has gone.
