Topic: Recorder installation not recognising SQL Server

I am trying to install Recorder 6 onto a new standalone Windows 7 computer, using SQL Server Express 2014.

I tried installing SQL Server 2014 express with Tools, however, Recorder 6 installation (6.15.4) did not recognise that SQL Server was installed and only offered the option to install a new instance of SQL Server.

I then uninstalled everything, and downloaded and installed SQL Server Express 2008 R2 with Tools - 64 bit version from the Microsoft website. I then tried installing Recorder 6 again, and it still not recognise that SQL Server Express was installed.

The only difference from the Recorder installation notes I have noticed is that Microsoft installed the MDF files under the directory
Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\DATA

What is the simplest and quickest way to get the latest version of Recorder 6 installed using SQL Server Express 2014?

Re: Recorder installation not recognising SQL Server

I suspect it is the version of R6 you are using. I don't think 6.15.4 version installs very easily on Windows 7. Version 6.17 was the first version  which was designed to work with Windows 7. I suggest that you install Version 6.23. I assume that you have  a site id so you can download v6.23 from www.Recorder6.info/Standalone623.zip (it takes a while so if this is a problem it can be supplied on a DVD).   Have a look at site www.Recorder6.info where you will find information on installation and some documentation which may be of use.

Re: Recorder installation not recognising SQL Server

Many thanks Mike. That has enabled me to install Recorder 6 on Windows 7 using Microsoft Server SQL 2014.

However, I noticed the following issues
The version is noted as 6.15.4.238, although I had just installed version 6.23. What needs to be done to display the correct version?

The following Custom Reports could not be parsed, because the report definition is incorrect.

JNCC_Dic1_Species_in_list.xms
JNCC_IW1_Spcies.xml
JNCC_IW2_Name.xml
JNCC_IW3_Location.xml

Re: Recorder installation not recognising SQL Server

Hi

I think something has gone wrong here. I have downloaded the 6.23 version to double check and there is nothing in there which l could have put in those reports and if the correct Recorderapp.exe is there then the version will be correct. I wonder if when you did the 6.15.4 install, it  partly worked and  the 6.23 files have not replaced them. Does R6 show in the Control Panel as an installed application. If so I think you should  uninstall  it and try the 6.23 install again.  I wonder which database you actually have installed. What dictionary  and db build does it say you are up to. If it is 2Z then I think you may have a 6.23 database and 6.154 software. If so you will not get very far with R6.

Re: Recorder installation not recognising SQL Server

Many thanks Mike. I uninstalled Recorder 6, and also deleted the Recorder directory under Program Files, and then installed again. That resolved the problem.
I think as you suggested, the uninstall of 6.15.4 software did not work correctly, and the install of 6.23 on top did not overwrite the relevant files, so consequently I had 6.15.4 software with 2Z dictionaries. Thanks for your help.
