Topic: Failure to install NBN Exchange Addin

After unzipping NBNExchange Addin for Recorder 6 to MyDocuments and then opening R6 (Tools, Install, Add-in Module) and then installing  the file NBNExchange.ocx the error message "The specified file is not a COM server and cannot be registered." appeared. This was followed by a statement that the file has been successfully installed. However the Addin does not appear among the list of addins in R6 - not surprisingly if it is not registered so what needs to be done?

Re: Failure to install NBN Exchange Addin

Try opening recorder 6 specifically as administrator, by right clicking on the icon and choosing run as administrator.  NBN Exchange Addin v6.22 is a standard addin and should install, but you need to be on R6 version 6.22 or above to install it . NBN Exchange Addin v6.17.0.10 is more difficult to install because it needs to directly access SQL Server.

Re: Failure to install NBN Exchange Addin

No success after entering administrator either with or without a password. I have no password only a security code. Unfortunately my version of R6 is 6-17-1. So perhaps it would be best to revert to exporting records using a spread sheet as originally intended.  Harold Smith

Re: Failure to install NBN Exchange Addin

The other thing you can try is copying the 3 files in the 6.17.0.10 version of the addin directly into the addin folder of Recorder 6. The three files are  nbn.bmp, nbn_exchange.sql, NBnExchange.ocx. When you install the addin find NBnExchange.ocx in teh Addin folder. This version will require you to login to SQL Server.

If this doesn't work there area few other things which we can try.

Re: Failure to install NBN Exchange Addin

Harold it looks as if you have failed to understand mike's instruction to run as administrator.  You need to locate the file Recorder.exe and click the right mouse button over it and choose "Run as administrator" and then log in in the usual way.

Re: Failure to install NBN Exchange Addin

Hi Rob,
Thanks, but I did what you suggest but when entering run as... the choice is "current user" or "the following user". The latter did not accept administrator and required a password.  I will now try Mike's suggestion.

Re: Failure to install NBN Exchange Addin

Hi Mike,

The 3 files are now in Addins but still unable to open. I opened R6, Tools, Install, Addin folder, select NBNExchange Format, install, select NBNExchange.ocx, open, mesage "need to be logged in as system administrator, select SQLserver account username shown as sa, login, message - login failed for user "sa" . I seem to be going round in circles!

Re: Failure to install NBN Exchange Addin

We've had this message at times. The addin was blocked from adding itself into the registry by the Sophos security software. the ICT department added an exception to Sophos for the Addin folder and after that everything worked fine.

Re: Failure to install NBN Exchange Addin

Who has administrator rights to your system? When SQL Server was installed someone (probably the person who installed it) will have become system admin (user sa). Once you can identify that person, they should be able to do the installation (if they still know the password they set).

Re: Failure to install NBN Exchange Addin

If you followed  our suggestion the sa password for SQL Server will be 'Recorder6'. I think the problem is not now in the addin, but connecting to SQL Server. This is why in 6.22 we put all the NBNExchange addin SQL in the database so the addin didn't need to install it. There may be ways of getting around this by loading the SQL manually, but this is going to be a lot more complicated than upgrading to 6.22 and using the newer version of the addin.
