Topic: Transferring to new laptop

I wish to transfer my Recorder 6 facility from an old off-line laptop (MS WindowXP) to a new laptop (MS Windows7) - which I also wish to keep off-line. On the old laptop I am running R6.22.2.273 Dictionary 0000002M.
I would be grateful for advice and instruction to get up and running on the new machine. With thanks.

Re: Transferring to new laptop

1. Install version 6.17.2 on  the laptop. You can download this version from www.Recorder6.info/Standalone.zip Refer to www.Recorder6.info for information on installing and for details of the version of SQL Server recommended. The recommended version of SQL Server will include Sql Server Management tools which you will need to complete the transfer.

2. Make sure R6 is running on the new machine.

3. Download and run the application upgrade up to version 6.22.2.273 Don't do any dictionary upgrades.

4. Backup your R6 database on the old laptop and copy the backup file to your new machine.

5. Use the SQl Server tools to restore the backup. Ask for instructions on this if you need them.

6. Copy across all your user files to the new machine.

Note that if you have used any of the mapping features (eg OS maps, boundaries etc.) these will be lost in the transfer and will need to be re-imported, but there is a short cut for part of this. Ask if you need it.

Re: Transferring to new laptop

Thank you Mike
I'll get started but anything about SQL is over-my-head so I will need instructions for your Point 5.
Thanks again

The instructions for step 5 are available from

www.Recorder6.info/Rec6_Restoring_From_Backup_Management_Studio.zip

They are also available from the documents page of www.Recorder6.info

Re: Transferring to new laptop

I think you are moving through to many versions in one go.   You are going from  SQL  Server 2000 to SQL server 2014, which no one has tried before, as we are still only supporting to SQL Server 2008. Do you have Management Studio on the original machine  ?

Re: Transferring to new laptop

From SQL2000 it is not possible to go beyond SQL2008 in one go. You will need (as we did) to restore your 2000 backup into a copy of 2008 Express first, then backup again & restore into the new version. Or detach & reattach of course.

Re: Transferring to new laptop

Thanks Rob. I wasn't aware of that.

If you have Management tools on the old PC then it sounds like you can detach the database and attach it on the new machine. If not then if you let me have a copy of the backup I can move it SQL Server 2008 for you and give you a file to attach or restore.

Germany have done a lot of testing on SQL Server 2014 and thinks R6  works with it to the point where they are recommending it. They don't use all the features of the system so there could be  problems we are not aware of, so some caution is advised.

Re: Transferring to new laptop

My Rec6 was loaded with SQL Server.2005 8.0.760 (more detail attached).
Is there a link were I can read and do the attach and detach myself or is it more involved than that? I have no experiance with the management studio.
Thanks to both

Re: Transferring to new laptop

I can give you instructions, but it does depend on having the tools on the original machine.

Re: Transferring to new laptop

Please excuse my confusion/inexperience, but with the SQL2005 management studio on the old laptop, as described in my previous message, does this not mean that I 'have the tools'. Please advise - and if the tools are in place - please send the instructions. With thanks.

Re: Transferring to new laptop

My misunderstanding not yours.   I have just put together some instructions. Sorry for the quality of the illustrations - it is quicker to take photographs rather than use screen capture.

Re: Transferring to new laptop

Is this link correct? As it the same link as sent on 15/12/2012, and which when applied, promted my reply of 16/12/2014. Presumeably I need to be working on the old machine to produce a backup from SQL2005 that is compatible with SQL2014.

Re: Transferring to new laptop

The link wasn't correct. You use SQL server 2005 tools on the old machine to detach, which is very easy.  Detach the database on the new machine also very easy. Copy NBNData_Data.mdb form the old machine to the new machine. Remove the log file. Attach the new database - this is a bit more complicated, but not much.

Re: Transferring to new laptop

OK up to 'remove the log file'
Where is it, what is it called and do I delete it?

I attached the .MDF anyway and got the attached message.

Re: Transferring to new laptop

The log file is in the same place as NBNdata_data and is called NBNdata_Log, but there isn't much point in worrying about this as the version of SQL Server on the original machine seems to be incompatible with SQL Server 2014 (probably 2012 as  well).   Although the originating machine is using SQL Server 2005 tools, the version numbers being reported in the error messages indicate that the actual database is running under SQL Server 2000.   It seems that you need to go through SQL Server 2008 or use tools which require both SQL Server and SQL Server 2000 running on the same machine. We haven''t come across this before as up to now we have been recommending SQL Server 2008.

I would be happy to convert this for you, if you can get me the backup file (say via dropbox)  It would be a very useful exercise as this could become a common problem.

OK. Happy to provide a useful exercise.
I need to think about transeferring the data.
