Topic: query about Dictionary, "Find Taxon" search

I am not sure whether the search facility within the Dictionary, when trying to find a species name, is limited to common and scientific names, or also includes any synonyms. In several cases I have not found species which should be there (I thought I had the current name), and I didn't find it, so had to resort to the NBN species dictionary to find a valid alternative name to try to find the entry to return to the data entry part of the system. In some cases it relates to differences between the dictionary I have, and the one via NBN ... but it's the principle I'm after. I can't find any reference in the help area as to whether synonyms are included in searches.

I'm using Recorder 6.17.2.251 and dictionary 00000014

... and before I submit this post, I have just found another puzzling example. where the common English name is not found - Common Plume (=Emmelina monodactyla) is not found in a search. This is the 1st example I've found of a common name not being found. Could there be a few odd discrepancies in my dictionary?

Thanks
Nigel

Re: query about Dictionary, "Find Taxon" search

When searching on a specific list synonyms and  common are only found if the if that synonym or common name is included in that list.  The common names which appear against the scientific name on a list can come from another  list, which  creates an anomaly in that a common name can appear against a species on a list, but that name will not be found when searching on that list. We are looking at possible solutions to this. However, when doing an unrestricted search the synonyms and common names should always be found if they are in any dictionary.       Common Plume (=Emmelina monodactyla) is in the dictionary  and is found on an unrestricted search on the Lepidoptera (MICRO) list , but  I don't know when it went in.. Before proceeding further you do need to bring your dictionary up to date to 0000002M  If you still have a problem, then it can be sorted out.

I think that sort of makes sense.
Thanks Mike.
Once I've got the rest of my records in for this year, I'll do any upgrade. But I don't want to rock the boat at the moment, before I get my data sent off safely, because I know "sod's law" operates in this environment.
