Topic: Installing add-ins

Hello,

I'm posting about two problems I'm having which may or may not be linked. We are running Recorder 6 Version 6.22.2.274

I wanted to install the NBN Exchange Add-In module to Recorder 6 on my PC. However when I go to Tools>Install>Add-In Module and then click on Install I get the following error :

I don't have access to the back-end of our Recorder 6 database - that is all controlled by NCC ICT department. However even when they logged in to my PC with admin rights the same error occurred. This problem also occurred when the latest version of Recorder 6 was installed on a new laptop for the first time. Only one of our PCs does not have this problem, despite the fact that my colleagues are pretty sure there was nothing different done when Recorder 6 was installed on that PC compared to all of the others.

While trying to fix this error, ICT uninstalled and re-installed Recorder 6 on my PC. Since then I've not been able to access the map. In the map drop-down menu only Map Options is available - View Map and Map Navigator Tool are greyed out.

The add-in problem is less of an issue at the moment, but I need to be able to access the map to run data searches.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

What did you have set up for the Maps ? Did you have boundaries set up or do you just create/import  them as required.

Which NBN Exchange addin were you trying to install. Was  it version 6.22 ?

We have the GB Base Map set up, and then just import search boundaries as required. The Base Map is still there in the list in Map Options (in fact there are three of them in the list!) I just can't open the map.

And yes, I was hoping to install the latest version of the NBN Exchange Addin (which ICT did successfully on my colleague's computer). I didn't get as far as selecting what I wanted to install though - as soon as I press the Install button (which should then let me navigate to the addin) the error appears.

You should be Ok just to reset the map. Open Map Options. Click on reset then select Yes (not All).  Try this and let me know what happens if it fails.

Not sure about the addin. Where the error occurs suggest that the problem is not specifically with this addin.  Have you got the normal system supplied addins installed (eg Recorder 6 standard validation ?  These should  be listed in the addin configurations.

When I click on Reset as suggested an Information Box appears with the following message: "Error Code -5: File access denied - C:\Program Files\Recorder 6 Workstation\Mapfiles\GBBaseMap.gsf

Could this just be because I don't have admin permission to do this and would need to ask ICT to do it for us?

The currently installed addins I have are:
Go to spatial ref on map
Go to Key
Display unchecked records
Recorder 6 Standard Validation

I assume that when our version of Recorder 6 was updated any updates to these addins (if there were any) would be carried through too?

You could just try right clicking on the Recorder icon and choosing Run as Administrator. You  may be blocked from doing this  so you may need to get your IT Dept to do it or ideally give you permissions on the Recorder 6 Workstation folder.

The addin problem may be due to the fact that you do not have sufficient permission on the work station to update the registry. The fact that the standard addins are there suggests that everything is in place to install an addin if  you have sufficient permissions.  Running as Admin as above may fix this if you can do it. Have your IT dept tried installing the Addin when logged on as Admin on the Workstation ?

I can't run it as an administrator. I will have a word with Richard Norton is ICT about that.

ICT have tried installing the addin when logged on as an admin. It worked fine on my colleague's computer but came up with the same error message on my computer (and the laptop with the freshly installed version of Recorder 6 on it).

If your IT can't install then it can't be permissions.  IT should  be able to get the maps working again as I think it is just permissions on the folder.

I run an LRC installation of R6 on a corporate server with a single workstation. When I got "Class not registered" when trying to install Add-Ins it was definitely a registry problem which our IT sorted.

There is a procedure for manually  installing an addin. Its bit complicated, but something your IT should  be able to do in a few minutes. Following the procedure usually shows why the automatic install isn't working.

Just as an update to this, ICT managed to install the addin manually on a couple of laptops and it seems to be working fine. Unfortunately it didn't seem to show why the automatic install isn't working (which it still isn't - it brings up an error message as soon as you click on the Install button. I guess if we need any future addins we'll just have to get ICT to use the manual method for those as well.

I think this is going to be a permission  issues. I suspect your IT dept. are using their own logins which do have the permission required. If next time they go through the process, they use your login it should  show where the problem is.
