Topic: NBN Exchange no text

I have just finished the export for the MOA and find I have an xml file but no text file to go with it. Any one else had this happen?

Re: NBN Exchange no text

Purgle had this problem for ages. Can't remember the fix, but I think it was the fault of an out of date addin which was replaced. Ask her or have a look though her posts.

Re: NBN Exchange no text

Thanks Rob meanwhile on the second attempt same problem and this is the error. I'm using V3 and there is no other version information in the Addins->About and the description is "NBNExchangeNu.ocx"

Re: NBN Exchange no text

Having spent a few days on this there has been progress but the results are basically the same; No Output.

I have run the SY07 Report and fixed the small number of likely causes like no grid system. Removed the V6.17 exporter and replaced with the v6.22 on my v6.18 system. The change is that I no longer have the crash report above. That's about all.

It seems that what was acceptable in the past is no longer acceptable and I now appear to have 180,000 errors that I was not aware of and were created by the import process. They seem to relate to imported data only rather than those entered directly.

The first 12,000 on the list require a sample to have a recorder. This seems odd since when I looked at the sample table no samples have a recorder they are all Null. Giving Sample.Recorders a value made no difference in R6. In this example in the sample dialog there is a recorder listed as "name, recorder" but it is not ticked. The addition of that key in Sample.Recorders made no difference. This is when I checked and found there are no Recorders set in Sample.Recorder. There is no chance to modify these in Recorder since they are using foreign keys from MapMate.

I suspect that this is a simplification on the inference by the report and it might be something to do with the Survey_Event. However I have a large list of Survey_Event no Recorder errors ~ 2000.

Verified Indicator Wrong:
Not sure about this one at all. When I check the Biotopes the verification is set to Original and this seems fine. I can't see why this might affect the export. As there are 22,600 I will not be doing this one at a time.

Taxon Occurrences, I have checked some of the 143,000 and they were Considered Correct or Correct, Checked and Verified so I'm not sure what is wrong about the verification. Again I don't think I shall visit all 143,000 especially when they appear correct.

So I still have the problem that the NBN export no longer produces an export for the NBN. It also takes a long time to process and I've been reluctant to use the only changes option. One would need confidence firstly and know the date the last one was done. I can export the entire database in 2 hours using SQL and the export takes about 18. Now if only I had the SQL that produces the export I could have probably done it.

Strangely now I have changed one Biotope by hand and run the SY06 Summary I have no Verified Indicator Wrong errors. I now have less confidence in the error reporting too but am pleased that 180,000 errors have just vanished! I don't suppose the export will export now?

Re: NBN Exchange no text

Tony

The first thing to try is to extract just a small amount of data to see if the problem is in the data or in the actual addin. Highlight just one Survey event which has some taxa which are checked and nothing unusual. Click on Tools/Export data then from the drop down list of export types to NBN Exchange Format. Select a suitable folder and destination file name and it should generate the export files.  Let me know what happens.

As far as missing Recorders is concerned, this could well cause the NBN Extract some problems.  These are not held jn the Recorder column in Sample, but in Survey_Event_ Recorder and Sample_Recorder_tables. If the problems reports shows error then it means there in no entry in the Sample_Recorder or Survey_Event  Recorder.  Possibly they are the result of a failure in the import, but it isn't something I have seen before.  You need to look at one of two carefully to see exactly  what has happened   It may be that the Sample_recorder entries are missing - if so can be created fairly easily as there are no new keys required. However, sometimes it is because the Survey_Event_Key in Survey_Event_Recorder  isn't in line with the the Survey_Event_Key of the Sample in Survey_Event_Recorder.

Verification errors are where the Verified indicator is out of step with the determination type. The fix for this is in the Batch Update which fixes problems or requires just one line of SQL. However, right or wrong this isn't going to cause what is there  it isn't going to cause the extract any problems.

Re: NBN Exchange no text

Thanks Mike, I just want to be clear on this Sample.Recorders is always empty and therefore seems to have no purpose. Is that correct.

I understand Sample_Recorder and its purpose I just couldn't see why I was being told Sample Recorder was empty when it is always empty.

Ok back on topic;

I cannot export any event.  I have tried from about five different surveys and tried events where the sample recorder looks ok [ticked] and where it does not [un-ticked].

What puzzles me is the tick in the first place. If recorder knows what the association is there from the survey event why does it not appear ticked. Why show it at all. It seems to be saying "I know what's wrong and how to fix it but I'll just have a good laugh instead" :-)

I haven't had time or enough caffeine to think about

It may be that the Sample_recorder entries are missing - if so can be created fairly easily as there are no new keys required. However, sometimes it is because the Survey_Event_Key in Survey_Event_Recorder  isn't in line with the the Survey_Event_Key of the Sample in Survey_Event_Recorder.

Tony

The list of recorders which occurs on the Recorders tab of the Sample (in the observation hiearchy) is the list of all recorders who took part on the survey event (i.e. all those which have an entry in the table SURVEY_EVENT_RECORDER.

The surveyors who took part in the particular sample will have a tick next to them, reflecting a presence of an entry in the SAMPLE_RECORDER table, which links the sample with an entry in SURVEY_EVENT_RECORDER. This is often but not necessarily all the people who participated in the event.

Not sure if that helps at all but...

Re: NBN Exchange no text

Sample.Recorder originally had a use in Recorder 2000, but  is now used to hold the unparsed Recorder for a temporary  import of data.  It has no effect on  NBNExport.

The way Recorders works is that you have two tables involved

Survey_Event_Recorder which has a unique key. It holds the Survey Event Key, and the Name Keys of all the Recorders for that Event.

Sample Recorder then holds the Survey_Event_Recorder_Key and Sample_Key to identifies which of the Survey_Event_Recorders apply to a sample.

What you look at the Recorder(s) in the Sample all the Recorders applicable to the Event are listed from Survey_Event_Recorder. The ones relevant to to that sample are ticked.  If entries in Sample_Recorder are missing  then you will see all the possible Recorders for that Event, but none will be ticked because  they are not related to that sample. These problems do need to be fixed, and this shouldn't  be difficult to do.

However, if you can't export even a straightforward event then this isn't the problem and we need to look at what is happening in the addin.  I will look at the code and put in  some checks which will help track down what the issue is.

When you get to the end of the process what is the message saying about the files generated. Does it report that the correct files have been generated  ?

There should be a log file in the Addin folder of Recorder 6. File name export_log.txt  Can you find it and email it to me, or it may have some information on what is happening.

Sorry Mike no message of success or failure. There is no log file either.

Re: NBN Exchange no text

Thanks Rob that does.

Thanks to Mike as well. I'm just running the export again as the last test did indeed work. As to why it didn't before it may have been due to a very old exporter. It had no version information and after its removal the option is still there and was assumed to be the new version. Mike did pin down another problem which seems unique. The thousands of our samples do not have recorders. This occurs for both old and new records. I still have to fix this and when I do it may be more apparent as to why it has happened.

Re: NBN Exchange no text

The following SQL will fix missing entries in the sample_recorder table, providing there is an entry in Survey_Event_Recorder. It will assume that all the Recorders were involved in the sample record.  This will usually be true especially with imported data. but not necessarily so.

INSERT INTO Sample_Recorder (Sample_Key,SE_recorder_Key,Entered_By,Entry_Date)
SELECT s.sample_key, SER.SE_Recorder_Key, S.Entered_By,S.Entry_date from Sample S
INNER JOIN Survey_EVent SE ON SE.Survey_Event_Key = S.Survey_Event_Key
INNER JOIN Survey_Event_Recorder SER ON SER.SURVEY_EVENT_KEY = SE.SURVEY_EVENT_KEY
where not exists(Select * from sample_recorder where
sample_recorder.sample_key = S.Sample_key)

Re: NBN Exchange no text

Hi
Problems again...

Following a failed set of NBN exports (missing start and end dates) for our NBN Gateway update using the older version, I updated the NBN exporter to the newest version (v6.21) last week and tested it on a small dataset. This appeared to be fine and Dario at NBN was happy with it. But then when I ran the export on one of my actual datasets it ran for about half a day then claimed to have produced a file containing 714,256 records. However there was no text file, only an xml.

I've run the problems revalidation reports and there are no issues showing with our data. We're fully up to date with R6 v6.22.2.274 and dictionary version 0000002M.

Help please as this 'quick update' has now wasted about three weeks of my time once again!
Thanks

Re: NBN Exchange no text

Did it produce a log file in the Addins folder?  Did it produce a zip file  ?

No log file and yes it produced a zip file containing only the xml.

Re: NBN Exchange no text

I have spent some time looking at this and have made some revisions in  the area where I believe it to be failing. I think it was getting to the point where   the temporary table was populated,  but then failing before writing the data to the text file. This was a very memory intensive process. I have changed the addin so that the writing of the file is done in blocks. I have been testing by exporting  670,000 records from a 4 million record live database and this has been working, I think with improved performance. The new version (version 6.23) is attached . When completing the final message will show the numbers of records in the temporary table and the number written to the text file. These should be the same.   It is important not to tick  'export failing validation ' option as this option only exports the failed records.

The log file is being written to the Reports folder of R6.

Re: NBN Exchange no text

That seems to have created a valid file this time - I've sent it to Dario at the NBN so he can tell me if there are any issues I haven't spotted. Hopefully it will be fine though. Thanks very much Mike!

Re: NBN Exchange no text

Going to try this new version myself, I've had a few write failures myself with v6.22. This does look promising.

Re: NBN Exchange no text

It worked. Dario raised some weird date issues with my file but they were in R6 and nothing to do with the exporter. Phew!

Re: NBN Exchange no text

Ok, the new NBN Exchange v6.23 Addin failed with the (same) following message I had in v6.22

RecorderApp: Export failed Cancel and Try Again - Check path and file name. Make sure you have write permissions on the folder.

Possibly part of the issue is it errors as soon as it tries to add abundance data. I'm now going to rerun it without adding abundance data.

I can confirm I have full permissions on the folder and there is nothing wrong with the file name format. My apologies, I should've reported this a while back but I did have a some workaround SQL.

Re: NBN Exchange no text

I reran the AddIn without adding abundance and it worked.

Re: NBN Exchange no text

Certainly works with Abundance. The message may be spurious.  I  will investigate.

Re: NBN Exchange no text

Indeed it does export abundance for some of my Surveys Mike, irrespective of the size of the Survey. I'm slipping, I should've also made that clear too! Many thanks.
