Topic: Moving Recorder to new laptop

I posted the question below on the tail end of a previous thread about moving to a new laptop but it failed to receive a response so I thought I would start a new thread in the hopes that someone might spot this and provide the solution.

"After a bit of a struggle, I've managed to set up stand-alone Recorder 6 on a new laptop running Windows 8.1. However, I've found it impossible to get my new version to recognise the backup file from the old machine. On installing Recorder onto the new laptop I did a backup to discover where the backup would save to, then I renamed that backup and copied in the backup from the old laptop. However, then trying to restore the database produced an error message to the effect that a valid backup file couldn't be found. I tried doing the restore while the Recorder version was 6.17 but have since upgraded to 6.22, apparently successfully, but the restore process still doesn't recognise the backup file.

Could you let me have the detailed instructions to do the restore using the tools?

Thanks,

Steve"

If it isn't possible to restore the database by another means, it would still be handy to know that so I can set about importing from the import files I used to populate the old laptop.

Re: Moving Recorder to new laptop

Thanks Mike,

This seems to be outside my comfort zone as far as computers are concerned but it sounds as though I need to get into SQL somehow which isn't somewhere I've ventured before. I shall have a look tonight and see if I can make sense of the solution provided in the other thread.

Re: Moving Recorder to new laptop

As long as you have SQL Management studio installed it is fairly easy to do. You will see from the 8.1 installation instructions that we recommend versions of SQL Server which include this.   Problem I have is that the procedure varies slightly depending on the version of SQL you have loaded, but if you let me know which version is installed I will provide  detailed instructions, or i can talk you though it on the phone if it helps (evening calls are ok  01635 820904).

What problems did you have with 8.1 ?  Are there any areas where we can improve the instructions.

Re: Moving Recorder to new laptop

From memory I think I have the 2008 SQL installed but I'd need to check that.

As to installing Recorder, despite the detailed instructions I couldn't get the Recorder installation process to recognise the SQL installation so in the end I took the advice in one of Sally's (I think) replies about installing Recorder using the compatibility manager as a last resort. I did this by browsing the Recorder disc in File Manager and clicking in the install.exe (?) icon and then I used the compatibility trouble-shooter. This seemed to resolve things and the SQL was picked up and the installation proceeded normally and apparently successfully. Again, all this is from memory so you'll have to make allowances for that!

I'll try and have a look at the laptop tonight and see how far I can get. Thanks for the phone number - you may well be getting a call.

Re: Moving Recorder to new laptop

Thanks for the info.  The 8.1 install shouldn't need compatibility mode, but I think there may be different releases of 8.1, which makes things complicated.

Re: Moving Recorder to new laptop

Thanks Mike.

It all worked and I now have an up to date Recorder. You were correct about the SQL Studio and that bit was very straightforward. Initially, it didn't resolve the restore problem and it was only when I noticed that I'd altered the name of the backup file from the old machine to make it easier for me to recognise, that I finally got the restore process to work. How stupid of me!
