Topic: Network Workstation problems.

I am having some issues with workstation installations of recorder 6 on our network. The problems seem to stem from permission issues.

Two of the PCs are running Windows 7 and a third XP the admin accounts can run R6 fine but the normal users can't. I have tried running the 'RecorderSystemChecker' and while this indicates it has fixed the problem, subsequent attempts to run R6 still fail. I have also tried following the RSC suggestion of removing the base map path and file but this made no difference.

Running as an admin via the normal user account works so i am pretty certain this is a permissions issue.

Suggestions welcome!

Re: Network Workstation problems.

You're not giving much away there. What are the symptoms? Are you getting any error messages? When does it fail?

Re: Network Workstation problems.

Hi Rob, Sorry. So used to it i'm working in my own world!

Two new PCs installed, both running Windows 7. Attempting to install R6 workstation access for new admin and 'standard' user accounts.
Crash occurs when R6 is started (pre user login) as a non-admin user.
Error is in relation to access of the Object Sheet files (Base Maps folder)
Admin user can run R6 normally, standard user account cannot (unless run as admin)

I strongly suspect permissions issues!

One of the PCs is actually now running properly on both user and admin accounts but i'll be damned if i can figure out what (if anything) i did differently. I think it may be the process of installation itself, i.e. order of installation and when R6 is run.

Re: Network Workstation problems.

We have had the same error so many times I can't remember the exact fix, but I suspect that running Workstationsetup.exe as admin is probably the key one.

For future reference though, if you get the problem, again check the registry (I think its HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Dorset software/Recorder 6/Settings on our system, but yours may say something different where ours has Dorset Software). Look at the settings for Object Sheet path and make sure that the specified folder actually exists.

I think on our system the problem was to do with the setup trying to create a folder inside C:\Program files(x86)\ which has restricted access. We have learned to tell the setup to install into C:\Recorder 6 (creating this folder if necessary) and then manually creating an Object Sheet folder within this after setup & modifying the registry setting accordingly.

Sometimes this then reveals a few other settings which are wrong, but the fix is the same either way. Just create the folder where you want it (or where you are able) and adjust the registry settings. If you are able to create the folder, that means you are also able to write to it. I expect your ordinary users do not have permission to write within the Program files folder.

Re: Network Workstation problems.

Cheers Rob, Cracked it.
In the end i had to install to a folder directly under C as you suggested. Run the fix tool and then manually edit the registry to point the Object Sheet path to the correct place.
Faff but thanks!
