Re: New CD's transfer of R2002 data to R6 using SQL Server 2005/Express

Hi

There are some issues with the transfer of Recorder 2002 to Recorder 6 using the new v6.10.4 CD's if you have installed Recorder 6 against an existing instance of SQL Server 2005 or SQL Express.

We are in the process of (hopefully) resolving the issues, but would advise users not to proceed with the transfer until I can provide further information/guidance.

Apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Please bear with us.

Many thanks and best wishes,

Sarah

Re: New CD's transfer of R2002 data to R6 using SQL Server 2005/Express

Is this this same problem as the one that I posted today in http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?id=475?

We can't use MSDE as our database of 532,175 taxon observations fills MSDE's capability (within 24M of the 2G limit).
We can't use SQL Server (Express) because of the transfer problems.
R2002's dictionaries are gettting very out of date. (An update would be helpful).

What do you advise we do please?

Hi Keith,

Have you tried shrinking your MSDE database? The amount of disk space it is using sounds like quite a lot for the number of records you have, unless you have loads of locations or other types of data set up.  If you don't know how to do this let me know.

Kind Regards

Re: New CD's transfer of R2002 data to R6 using SQL Server 2005/Express

I had understood that compression was enabled by default (I seem to remember reading this somewhere that I can't now locate) however as you feel this may be excessive I have now re-installed against MSDE (experiencing a new set of problems that I will append to http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?id=422). Although the transfer died abnormally I may have a working MSDE database with the following statistics:

master.mdf 12352KB
mastlog.ldf 512KB
model.mdf 640KB
modellog.ldf 512KB
msbdata.mdf 3072KB
msdblog.ldf 512KB
NBNData_Data.MDF 1884992KB
NBNData_log.LDF 1280KB
tempdb.mdf 132544KB
templog.ldf 1536KB

Locations 1403
Names & Addresses 2420
Refs 555
Surveys 97
Spec obs 532175
Habitat obs 1523

Which is slightly smaller than the last time I tried (maybe because the transfer died?) but still doesn't leave much headroom for expansion as it is 90% full. I would be interested to know if you think this can be compressed and if so, how to do it please?

Kind regards, Keith

Re: New CD's transfer of R2002 data to R6 using SQL Server 2005/Express

Hi Keith

Although there are command line methods of shrinking your database its probably best to download a free tool like SQL Server Database Manager Express (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta … laylang=en). Use this to connect you your local MSDE instance then right click on the NBNData database and select the Shrink Database task. I can't remember if this has the option to select to move pages to the beginning of the file, if its there then select it because the Shrink operation is much more effective then.

Although MSDE will automatically shrink, you aren't actually in control of when this will occur so you may find that a manual shrink helps significantly. Looking at the database size I think there is probably a few hundred megabytes available to the shrink, but obviously thats just a guess.

Thanks John. It shrank by 161Mbytes, so your guess was pretty good.

I'll go back to R2002, resolve the determination issues and try going to MSDE again, hopefully somehow avoiding the problems reported in http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?id=422, though most don't seem to be under my control. If you have any thoughts...
