Topic: Recorder 6 Workstation Install Exception - "%1 could not be found"

We recently migrated the National Moth Recording Scheme database to a new server, specifically from Windows Server 2003 (32-bit)/SQL Server 2005 to Windows Server 2008R2 (64-bit)/SQL Server 2008R2. The actual migration went well; however, I wasn't able to import any data. Mike Weideli helped fix the problem by supplying some code to rebuild the indexes of all the tables in the database. This worked a treat and I'm delighted to say Recorder 6 Server is stable and in production, and much quicker!

Recorder 6 Workstation is another matter. As per thread http://forums.nbn.org.uk/viewtopic.php?id=4834 we too are consistently getting the "%1 could not be found" exception which along with Rob Large at WSBRC seem unable to resolve. I have reasonably checked and double-checked server permissions and my IT Department are happy I have full control. Anti-virus and Firewall have also been disabled and still the same error everytime. The R6W install from the old server works as designed; however, making registry changes etc., to point to the new setup all fails.

I'm out of ideas, I do have users that require R6W installations which at present I cannot give them. If they require any reports etc., I have to run them via my R6W install on the server itself. Clearly this is a major issue that needs a resolution as two major Recorder 6 users have experienced the same and no doubt in the future others will too. Knowledge of this error may, for some, stop them entirely from migrating to new platforms in order to maintain vital hardware and software support.

Any help towards a resolution appreciated.

Re: Recorder 6 Workstation Install Exception - "%1 could not be found"

Les (and anyone else)

I have just attempted a workstation install (post removal of Kaspersky & replacement with Bitdefender), using the same setup as before:

We are running Recorder6 on Windows Server 2008 R2 (64 bit)/Windows SQL Server 2012.

Server installation is fine. Workstation install (under Windows 7) fails exactly as yours does with the %1 error.

Looks like we are still in the same boat, except that I still have a fully functioning install (SQL Server 2000) with all workstations connected, so my users aren't breathing down my neck.

But our ITC would dearly love to sack that old server.

Re: Recorder 6 Workstation Install Exception - "%1 could not be found"

Les, I don't know if this will help you, or anyone else get to the bottom of this, but here's a depressing (or inspiring) story.

Today I received a brand new workstation, straight out of the box.

After some fairly basic setup, I attempted an install of R6 from the new (WS2008/SQL2012) server and what do you know, it started first time with no errors. Much jubilation all around.

Unfortunately the active copy of our db is still on the SQL2000 setup, so I then had to uninstall the successful install, run a registry cleaner to remove any orphaned settings, and reinstall from the old server. This also worked fine.

However, I know from painful experience that it is best to check these things, so I again uninstalled, cleaned and attempted a reinstall from the new server. This time the %1 error is back.

I have now reinstalled the old version again and it works.

So the solution to this problem would appear to be to buy all your users brand new workstations.

As if that is going to happen....

Rob, very many thanks for this update. Clearly the cost/benefit is something to consider (joking!)

I'll have another crack when I can...

Re: Recorder 6 Workstation Install Exception - "%1 could not be found"

Mike has suggested paying us a visit to attempt to debug this problem, so fingers crossed...

Actually we are seriously considering a factory reset of all six workstations. But then we are all experienced IT professionals & would not be afraid of having to put everything back the way it was. Even so we would be looking at half a day or more of everyone's time, so no mean expense.

Re: Recorder 6 Workstation Install Exception - "%1 could not be found"

I've tried to clean the Registry manually (post-uninstall which also "%1" errors during the AddIn uninstall - is this of significance?) of all recognisable Recorder-related keys and it still fails to install.

Re: Recorder 6 Workstation Install Exception - "%1 could not be found"

Yes we have been getting the error on uninstall also. Fortunately even if you click "Close application" it continues with the uninstall to completion. I assume that it has to access Recorder.exe in order to do some of the uninstalling & that is what triggers the error.

I have been doing the cleanup with CCleaner (a free download) which seems to pick up everything, including a lot of stuff you would never find by eyeballing the registry.

I use CCleaner at home but I don't have it here, I'll have a word as it could be useful. Still not given up but as yet to find a solution.
