Topic: Transferring R6 to a new computer

For quite a few years I had the 2002 version of Recorder, but took the plunge last year and upgraded to R6 as far as 6.18.1.259.

That was on Win XP SP3.

Now I have upgraded to a much faster computer with Win 7 (64 bit).

So, I want to transfer R6 as painlessly as possible.

How do I go about it please?

Thanks
Don

Re: Transferring R6 to a new computer

1. Download the installation instructions Standaslone Version 4.1 from  http://jncc.defra.gov.uk/page-4595 These were written for Windows 7 so should be accurate.
2. Get the appropriate version of SQL Server.  See www.recorder6.info.  Windows 7  - Any Service pack - 64  bit computer SQL SERVER 2008 R2 (64 bit Version with tools) Make sure you get the version with tools.
3. Install SQL Server and R6 version 6.17.2  If you haven't got this you can dowload it from www.Recorder6.info/Standalone.zip Install using your current site id and security key.
4. Check that it is working
5. Take a back up of your existing system and copy the backup file onto the new machine.
6. Try to restore using R6 restore. If this doesn't work ask for detailed instructions for restoring using the tools.
7. Run the upgrade  from 6.17 to 6.18
8  Copy over the other files like Rucksacks, Recording Cards  form the user files folder. On a Windows 7  machine with a standard installation these will be in  C:\Users\Public\Documents\Recorder 6\User Files
9. If you have been using maps then let us know what you have installed and we can advise of the best way to deal with these.

I suggest you make sure that from  6.18  is working before you upgrade to 6.22. When you upgrade to 6.22 make sure you upgrade the Dictionary  to the latest version.

Re: Transferring R6 to a new computer

Thanks for that Mike. It confirmed the way I planned to approach the job, but I couldn't find the Standalone file anywhere.

I have SQL Server 8 Express with Tools on my computer, but when I try to install R6 from the Standalone.Zip I get the error message below - the 2nd line down baffles me because I have Win 7 Professional (64 bit) installed.

I have sorted the problem mentioned.

Re: Transferring R6 to a new computer

I have installed back to where I was on the old computer and most things seem to be working OK.

A couple of things:-

Some time ago I installed the Watsonian Vice County Boundaries and OS Map Tiles - the 'Map Files' folder on the old computer list all the OS gif files.
Now I find that when I look at 'Maps / Map layers' the ten VC's I used the most are listed but don't appear on the base map when selected - same with the SSSI etc polygons.

I still have the VC and OS discs.

The User Files folder you mention doesn't seem to be in the R6 installation -  in my case on the D:drive as it is much larger then the C:drive.

It is quite some time since I last did all this, so I am quite rusty to say the least!

Re: Transferring R6 to a new computer

Transfering the Map tiles is not easy. It can be automated, but has only been done for a specific system and there is no generic version. Unless you have hundreds it will be easier to do manually. You need to remove all the existing ones and install them again, but  doing it from the .gsf files will be much quicker. Removal can be done manully or by deleteing them from the tables. Need to do a bit of research to say which table it is. Copy the ,gsf files to the new machine ( have instruction somewhere for installing them).

The files will be somewhere. Possibly the folder will be hidden and you may need to change this, Try a search on  'Native Trees.ruk'.  Searches find hidden folders

Re: Transferring R6 to a new computer

After a bit of a struggle, I've managed to set up stand-alone Recorder 6 on a new laptop running Windows 8.1. However, I've found it impossible to get my new version to recognise the backup file from the old machine. On installing Recorder onto the new laptop I did a backup to discover where the backup would save to, then I renamed that backup and copied in the backup from the old laptop. However, then trying to restore the database produced an error message to the effect that a valid backup file couldn't be found. I tried doing the restore while the Recorder version was 6.17 but have since upgraded to 6.22, apparently successfully, but the restore process still doesn't recognise the backup file.

Could you let me have the detailed instructions to do the restore using the tools?

Thanks,

Steve
