Topic: New install of Recorder 6

I am trying to install R6 on another laptop (W7 32-bit). I have downloaded and installed SQL 2008 R2. I have downloaded and installed the Standalone 6.17 files. All goes well until the last bit when I am "Attaching NBN Data File". I get error message "File Activation Failure. The physical file C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\DATA\nbndata_data_log.LDF" may be incorrect"

What does this mean?
What can I do about it?
How can I complete the installation?

Re: New install of Recorder 6

The install files don't include the LDf file and this is created during the installation. This suggest either some problem with the installtion of SQL Server  or  perhaps a corrupt download of  NBNDATA_Data.mdf  in the install package.  Do you have the SQL Server mangement tools installed ?  If so you could try unzipping and attaching the database included in the install. It can be found in the install files under Sytem/Database. The zip file is NBNData_data.zip. Trying this would identify what the problem is.

Re: New install of Recorder 6

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the prompt reply. I have deleted everything and started again, by downloading SQLEXPRWT_x86_ENU again. I have run the exe and am installing again. Near the end of the installation of SQL2008R2 I get a message "Unable to find some components. Reinstall application" I click on the only option which is OK and the install appears to continue. After a short time I get the SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup Complete window to say that the installation completed successfully. This happened yesterday. How can I know that SQL Server 2008 R2 is in fact installed OK? Any quick checks I can run?

Re: New install of Recorder 6

I located the NBNData_Data.zip file and unzipped it, placing the file NBNData_Data.mdf in C:\
I opened SQL Server Management Studio
Highlighted Databases
Right-click Databases
Attach
Add
  Navigated to NBNData_Data.mdf
OK
In bottom half of pane "NBNData" database details the file NBNData_Data.mdf is listed but nbndata_data_log.LDF is given as "not found"

When is the log file created?

Re: New install of Recorder 6

Remove the log file shown in this window. Highlight the log file in the lower window and click remove. Then you should be able to continue with the attach. SQL should then  recreate a blank log file.  What happens when you try this may help us understand the install problem.

Re: New install of Recorder 6

By coincidence I have just got this error on an installation under Windows 8.1 .  I manually attached the database as detailed  above. During this there was a   message  about adding new catalogues which I closed.  The database then attached. I then ran the R6 install again. It warned about the database existing where  I clicked to continue and the installation completed.
I have then removed R6 and deleted the NBNdata_mdf and log file from the folder, and tried gain with an R6 install, this time it worked without a proble. This suggests that it is something to do with the catalogue message which is interefring with the R6 install.  Please could you try attaching the database and then doing an install. If you could let me know what messages you get  then thsi will help to find out exactly what is happening.

Re: New install of Recorder 6

Did the following
Unzipped NBNData_Data.mdf from install folder
Placed NBNData_Data.mdf in C:\
Opened Management Studio
Right clicked Databases
>Attach
In Attach Databases window
>Add
Navigated to C:\NBNData_Data.mdf
>OK
In Attach Databases window lower pane there are 2 files nbndata_data.mdf and nbndata_data_lg.ldf
Message alongside log file "not found"
Log file highlighted
>Remove
Clicked on OK to continue with the Attach.
Message "If you are certain that you have added all the necessary full-text catalogs, click OK. To add more catalogs click Cancel
>OK
Message "An error occurred when attaching the database(s). Click the hyperlink in the message column for details
>OK
Message - see screenshot

Didn't get beyond this so did not try a new R6 install

Re: New install of Recorder 6

It would be worth trying a new install now. If this doesn't work try specifically opening Management Studio as a Administrator (right click on the icon and choose run as admin)., then try the attach again.   I think the problem is the catalog request which is preventing R6 from completing  and what you have done so far may have got rid of this, or you may need to get the attach to work to clear it.

Re: New install of Recorder 6

Nothing seems to work on this. I've downloaded and installed SQLEXPRWT_x86_ENU repeatedly. Everytime I delete then reinstall SQLExress 2008 R2 I get near the end of the install and I get error message "Cannot find some components. Please reinstall". I click on the only option which is OK. I get the same message again. Clicking on OK again permits the install to continue and I get the 'successfully installed’ window. Downloading and installing R6 again gets to the end of the process where I am "Attaching the NBN Data File" and I then get the error message which includes the line "File activation failure. The physical file name “C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\DATA\nbndata_data_log.ldf” may be incorrect”. I have tried extracting the NBNData_data.mdf file and attaching to SQL in Management Studio (Run as Admin) as per previous instructions. Each time I do this the log file is created with the Not Found message alongside. Removing the log file and then reattaching has the same result.

Presumably something to do with this version of W7 (?)

Re: New install of Recorder 6

Don't think this is a general  W7 problem, as I have done many installs on this without a problem.  I was getting the message, but in Windows 8 and the method I descibed above of attaching it manually worked. The problems seemed to be caused by removing  SQL and installing it a second time. It looked like something was left behind from the unistall which caused the problem, but don't know specifically what. The fact that  you can't atach manually is of concern.  I will investigate further and get back to you.  I have seen the install of SQl Server fail in the way you describe, but the installation has been Ok.

Re: New install of Recorder 6

One problem is going to be that  from the screenshot it seems you have put nbndata_data.mdf in the root of  the C drive. This is a protected folder under Windows 7, so I  think this will cause a problem in reading the file and also in writing the log files. If you move this to another folder, it might allow it to be attached and once this has been done R6 may install.

Re: New install of Recorder 6

Ok Mike - I'll try putting the .mdf file somewhere else and I'll get back to you after I've had another go.

Re: New install of Recorder 6

A reinstall of SQLEXPRWT 2008 and following the other tips proved to work this time - as ever thanks for your assistance Mike.............the only difference during the new install of SQL was that at the Instance configuration window I accepted Default Instance. Also the Database Engine Configuration window never appeared. R6 installed from newly downloaded files and is now at v6.17. Now the hard work starts to bring it all up to 6.22 and dict 23.
