Re: Mapping in Recorder

Hi All,

I'm currently working for Greenspace Information for Greater London and am based in the Royal Parks setting up and starting to populate their version of Recorder.

Unfortunately the Royal Parks still doesn't have a GIS so I am looking into other ways that they can graphically represent data until they get one. We are trying to push for this but it may still be a year or two away!

I wondered whether anybody actually used the mapping in Recorder at all and if so whether anybody had tried loading up any base maps with a better resolution than the 1:50,000 tiles?

Otherwise, does anybody have any other suggestions as to ways of interpreting data graphically without GIS? (Matt at GiGL is going to be looking into options using google maps at some point in the future).

We're currently using Recorder 2002 but comments about both this and Recorder 6 would be appreciated as we will probably be updating in a few months time.

Thanks,

Ian

Re: Mapping in Recorder

MapInfo supply a free "reader", downloadable from their website last time I looked.
Google Earth would be something worth investigating.

Re: Mapping in Recorder

Here's a list of some free GIS packages:

I've not used any of them extensively, but in the brief tests I've given them they seem perfectly acceptable if you're not after anything too complex.

Re: Mapping in Recorder

Hi Ian

If you have access to the maps in digital format, Recorder should have no problem using maps in much higher resolution than 1:50,000. There are no upper limits on the resolution it will support.

Are there any specific GIS functions you need that you can't get from Recorder's Map tool? I've played with Google maps from this point of view, its Ok but if you need to represent large numbers of distribution points then the page can get quite large so it may not be ideal.

Good luck

Re: Mapping in Recorder

Thanks to all for your comments and suggestions.

In answer to John's query - we can probably use Recorder's map tool for anything straightforward and go to GiGL for anything more complicated until we get GIS. I've had mixed comments about the Recorder map tool so want to check out both Recorder mapping and alternatives so we can make our own decision.
