Topic: Grid ref precision via map function

Hello,

Have just had a query from someone using the map view to assign a grid reference as they wanted to zoom in to locate a more specific grid ref.  You can zoom to enter an 8-fig grid reference though not beyond but can of course enter a 10-fig GR manually. Just wondered if others thought this would be a useful tweak?

Cheers,

Re: Grid ref precision via map function

Hi Tamara,

I think it is possible to zoom in to a map and select a location with 10-figure grid reference. It is just a question of having the correct configuration settings for the map.

There is one pair of settings, clickedSrefPrecisionMin and clickedSrefPrecisionMax which determine hard limits on the precision of a grid reference. They take values 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10 and default to 2 and 10 respectively, meaning anything between a 2-figure and a 10-figure grid reference is possible.

However there is another setting, maxZoom, which indirectly affects the smallest grid square that can be selected. The size of square that is shown when you click on the map is automatically decided based upon how far you have zoomed in to the map. This setting can restrict how far you can zoom in to the map and if you can't zoom right in, you'll never be able to click and get a 10-figure grid ref.

As an aside, I am slightly sceptical about the value of 10-figure references currently because it is pretty hard to locate yourself that accurately. A GPS may give a 10-figure grid reference but with an error usually of several metres.

Thanks for info Jim.  I had also questioned accuracy (and therefore value) of anything more than 8-figure but at least now I can amend if the consensus is that this is required.
