Topic: Adding taxa to dictionary

I'm not clear in my mind as to what happens if I add a taxon to a dictionary. I have some records of taxa which appear in the 2008 and 2012 editions of the Duff Coleoptera lists, but not in the Preferred Coleoptera list in R6. I can add taxa via Dictionaries > Edit Taxon Details. What happens when a future dictionary update includes the species that I have added earlier? What happens to the Taxon Occurrences I may have entered against the taxon/taxa I have added?

Re: Adding taxa to dictionary

Check first that the taxa are not in the list of additional names ( Sericoderus brevicornis isn't there) . If they are then there is no advantage in creating one in the Coleoptera list.  The Taxon you enter is similar to any other, but it doesn't get a taxon group or sort order (see note below) and  it can't be exported. You can add the taxa into the list (in the right place or at the end), or into the special list designated for user added taxa. If they are all togteher in the 'A List to Hold User Added Taxa'  they are easier to find, but  it doesn't matter as long as you remember where they are. When the taxon goes into the dictionary you need to move the determination. You can do this manually or there are some tools which help with this. Tools include batch updates and there is an addin which is being trialed, which allows a sort order and group to be added to the taxa and also manages changing the entries when the taxon is added to the dictionary.

Re: Adding taxa to dictionary

The addin has been checked by a few people and some minor bugs fixed. It will allow you to add new taxa and also to allocate a taxon group and sort order to them. It has not had enough use for me to be sure it is Ok, but if used to add taxa any problems should be obvious. You may like to give it a try.

Re: Adding taxa to dictionary

I just installed it mike, but it doesn't seem to do anything. Should it appear in the Tools menu, or somewhere else?

Re: Adding taxa to dictionary

Found it thanks, are there any instructions? I just tried to add something but it was not immediately obvious what I had to do. It crashed, but I may have been doing something wrong.

Re: Adding taxa to dictionary

Not good news that it crashed. What happened. All yoiu should need to do is to enter a name, select the rank (eg species). Click on Add and it will ten ask you to choose a parent.  If in testing you choose a high level it will take a while to change the sort orders (it needs to move everthing below the one you have inerted), but this will nolt be the case if the parent is a genus)

Re: Adding taxa to dictionary

Ah I see what happened. I did not have the Recorder window maximised and I use a fairly small monitor. The add button was off the bottom of the screen. Unsure of what to do I clicked Change parent (obviously before the taxon was added) , it allowed me to choose one, but crashed on return (a violation of the PK constraint as I recall). Needs to trap the absence of a current taxon I guess.

Re: Adding taxa to dictionary

Thanks. I can duplicate this, so should be able to fix fairly easily.
