Topic: R6 and Windows 8 64-bit - Backup and Merge Data Items

Generally I am very pleased with R6 running in Windows 8 64-bit. It's extremely fast. But I notice that bizarre little things are happening.

1. When I take a back up the little window that says "Backup complete" does not appear. I just get the mouse arrow and R6 locks up. If I then go Ctrl-Alt-Delete and get Task manager, when the Task Manager window appears I close it and the "Backup completed" message appears. The backup has been taken successfully.

2. When I Merge Data Items, at the end of the Merge, the Merge window cannot be cleared and again R6 locks up. Then if I get the Task Manager window as above and clear it, I get the "Data Merge is complete" message. The merge has taken place successfully.

Anybody any thoughts on this?

A question. When this happens, can you get the Backup complete or Data merge complete dialogs up by pressing Alt+Tab (perhaps repeatedly)?

The dialogs are probably modal (so when one is open, you cannot do anything else apart from click OK). I have noticed in Windows 7 (and it is probably the same in W8) that there is a problem with the order in which additional windows appear sometimes. So the dialogs are probably there but beneath the open R6 window. Unfortunately, since you cannot minimise the R6 window (because the dialog is modal), you are having to use the task manager to force the switch in order. ALT+TAB should have the same effect, but without having to resort to task manager.

I think the problem seems mainly to occur when a program has accessed another program somehow. Perhaps when the dialog is produced by a process other than the main application you are using.

I have a database (Access) which creates reports in the form of word documents & also accesses MapInfo for mapping etc. It worked fine under XP, but now under W7 routinely the Word (or mapinfo) window opens in the background.

I get the same trying to print to a pdf from Mapinfo. I click print and then nothing happens, because the print dialog (asking where to save the file) is hidden from view.
